An elephant stands on a surfboard, drops into a wave, and rides it with surprising control.<br /><br />It sounds like the setup for a joke, but in 2010 it became one of the most memorable images in an Accenture advertising campaign.<br /><br />"Surfing Elephant" was created by Y&R New York for Accenture, directed by Thierry Poiraud and produced at Paranoid US in Los Angeles.<br /><br />French visual-effects company BUF handled the digital work that helped turn the impossible idea into a convincing piece of surfing imagery. The commercial was released in May 2010.<br /><br />The message was contained in a simple tagline: "Who says you can't be big and nimble?"<br /><br />The elephant represented Accenture's size, while its ability to ride a wave represented agility and flexibility.<br /><br />Accenture, a global management consulting and technology services company, was using an impossible surfing scene to communicate a very conventional business idea: being large does not necessarily mean being slow or inflexible.<br /><br />From Tiger Woods to a surfing elephant<br /><br />The commercial appeared shortly after Accenture ended its sponsorship relationship with Tiger Woods.<br /><br />Woods had been the central figure in Accenture's advertising for six years, with the company's campaigns using his sporting ability to represent qualities such as precision, performance and agility.<br /><br />Accenture ended the relationship in December 2009 following the scandal surrounding Woods's personal life.<br /><br />The company then introduced a new campaign featuring animals performing improbable feats.<br /><br />One advertisement showed a frog jumping over other frogs with the line "Play quantum leapfrog."<br /><br />The surfing elephant followed the same approach.<br /><br />Rather than abandoning the visual language Accenture had built around Woods, the campaign replaced the golfer with animals that could communicate similar ideas through unexpected situations.<br /><br />For an international consulting company, the approach also had a practical advantage.<br /><br />Animals and simple visual metaphors could communicate across markets without relying heavily on language or a celebrity personality.<br /><br />Making an elephant surf<br /><br />The visual-effects challenge was to make the elephant behave like a surfer without making it stop looking like an elephant.<br /><br />BUF described the project as part of its "plausible unreality" work.<br /><br />The company wanted to give the animal the physical dynamics of a surfer while retaining its characteristic qualities of heaviness, slowness, and distinctive movement.<br /><br />That balance was important.<br /><br />If the elephant moved like a lightweight human athlete, the illusion would immediately lose its appeal.<br /><br />Instead, its movements remain heavy and slightly awkward, creating the impression of an enormous animal trying to maintain its balance on a surfboard.<br /><br />BUF had to integrate the computer-generated elephant with filmed ocean elements, including waves, foam and spray.<br /><br />Matching the CG character to the movement and physical appearance of the water required careful compositing and effects work.<br /><br />The production also used practical elements. According to effects company Anatomorphex, mechanical elephant legs were filmed underwater in a tank to create realistic footage of the animal paddling through the water.<br /><br />For other shots, a real elephant was filmed on dry land while water splashes and other elements were later combined with the ocean footage and CG surfboard.<br /><br />The finished commercial therefore combined live-action photography, practical effects, computer animation and compositing.<br /><br />An elephant in the lineup<br /><br />The surfing itself provides the commercial's central visual joke, but it also makes the business metaphor immediately understandable.<br /><br />There is no obvious physical object that represents management consulting.<br /><br />Instead, Accenture showed something enormous and apparently unsuited to surfing performing an activity associated with balance, timing and agility.<br /><br />The result is deliberately absurd, but the visual language is simple enough to work almost anywhere.<br /><br />An elephant is big. A surfer needs to be nimble.<br /><br />Put the two together, and the advertising message requires very little explanation.<br /><br />The commercial also demonstrates how much visual-effects technology had evolved by the end of the 2000s.<br /><br />The objective was not to make a cartoon elephant surf, but to create the temporary illusion that a real elephant could actually be in the water.<br /><br />That approach is what made the spot memorable. The animal remains unmistakably elephantine even while doing something completely outside its natural abilities.<br /><br />More than a decade later, the basic image still needs almost no explanation.<br /><br />There is an elephant, there is a surfboard, and there is a wave.
