Having previously shaped the Great White Twin for Kelly inspired by the outline of a Great White Shark, Mike and Kelly set out to craft a more conventional outline designed for hold in tubes, turns on rail, and hold in round wave faces from Canggu to Coolangatta.<br /><br />Unveiled in March 2024 during Kelly's historic sessions at Kirra, this is Kelly's favorite shape for good waves, especially reef passes, point breaks, and perfect beach breaks.<br /><br />For Wave Type, this is Kelly Slater's favorite shape for good waves - a more conventional outline with incredible hold in round wave faces. The shape comes to life in tubes over reef passes, turns on rail at point breaks, with lots of hold in perfect beach breaks, but also works as a performance shortboard at waves like Lowers.<br /><br />For Board Features, this shape has the DNA of a Bali-tube-shooter, the Spaceship represents decades of R&D by Mike Woo. Hard to talk aerial surfing, these days, without coughing up the name Hughie Vaughan. Harder still to believe he’s only 19 years old.<br /><br />He’s really taken flight, if you will, over the past few years. The original seed for the Bottle Rockets division. Entered Stab High Lakey Peak as a tiny 15-year-old and levitated around the comp-site like a garden bird. Proved he could hang with fully grown men despite weighing the same as a damp towel. <br /><br />Couple years later, Japan 2025, Hughie comes of age and wins the men’s title, a spear tackle from Mikey Wright to seal it. Then: the Hughie Flip at The Nines, reshared and annexed by Tony Hawk. Mainstream television appearances in Australia followed; Hughie now a nationally recognised flying object.<br /><br />A day out from the opening horn of Stab High Virginia Beach presented by Monster Energy, and we get the former champ and in many circles, the overwhelming favourite, Hughie Vaughan. He discusses all there is to discuss about aerial surfing, including his current top air guys on earth, what he sees as the limitations of competitive surfing, and a genuinely moving section on family and the lessons left behind by his late mother.<br /><br />Right now, we’re one day out from competition here in Virginia Beach. Fighter jets pass overhead constantly, thick-necked machines ripping through the sky every twenty minutes. They’re here for us, surely. A ceremonial flyover for the occasion.<br /><br />Tomorrow we’ll show them what aerial warfare looks like with significantly worse funding.
