Atach: The Modular Surfboard for Travel

Portuguese startup ATACH has developed a modular surfboard that fits inside a standard checked suitcase, addressing one of the biggest challenges facing surfers: transporting boards safely, conveniently, and affordably.

Launched on Kickstarter on July 7, 2026, the campaign reached its $10,000 funding goal in less than six hours and has already surpassed $25,000 in pre-orders, attracting backers from several countries and validating international interest in the product.

Unlike conventional surfboards, ATACH's board breaks down into three interlocking sections that fit inside a standard travel suitcase. Assembly requires no tools, has no loose parts, and can be completed in just a few minutes.

One of the biggest advantages of the ATACH platform is its modularity.

Surfers can combine different noses, center sections, and tails, creating dozens of configurations for different types of waves and surfing styles.

Instead of buying several complete boards, they can simply purchase additional modules, potentially saving significant amounts of money while also reducing storage requirements and making transportation easier.

The company believes this approach could transform surfboard mobility, particularly for travelers, urban surfers, and people with limited storage space.

The idea emerged after founder Simão da Câmara Manuel repeatedly experienced problems with damaged surfboards while traveling to destinations including Bali, Australia, Brazil, and the Maldives.

While studying Materials Engineering at NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA), he realized that existing modular solutions addressed only part of the problem, as they still required oversized bags, assembly tools, and multiple loose parts.

He then began developing his own solution using 3D-printed prototypes, continuing development while working as an engineer in the Netherlands.

The project was initially self-funded by the founder before receiving outside investment.

In 2025, ATACH raised $100,000 through a SAFE investment from a U.S. investor at a $2 million valuation.

The investment enabled the company to accelerate product development, move forward with international patent applications, and produce its first manufacturing batch.

Before launching on Kickstarter, the startup produced its first boards and made them available to surfers and content creators for testing and product validation.

Campaign backers can choose from several rewards, including modular boards, interchangeable components, and accessories, all available at special launch prices ahead of the product's market release.

The company is already in talks with distributors, including potential partners in Japan, where heavy reliance on public transportation makes carrying traditional surfboards particularly difficult.

At the same time, it is seeking commercial partnerships with companies such as Decathlon, Indie Campers, Roadsurfer, Sport Zone, and Despomar.

In addition to its flagship board, ATACH is also developing a modular foam board for surf schools using the same modular platform.

According to industry estimates, surfing is practiced by more than 60 million people in more than 170 countries.

The sport continues to grow, driven by the opening of new wave pools and its inclusion in the Olympic Games.

The global surfboard market is valued at more than $10 billion per year.

ATACH is currently seeking additional investment to increase production capacity, accelerate international expansion, and develop new modular products.
