Before @wave_of_da_winter_ , before social media, and before the internet connected the surf world, a handful of goofy-footers quietly built legendary reputations at Pipeline. These were the years when respect in the lineup had to be earned, and the pecking order was real.<br /><br />Six of the best goofy-footers to ever ride Pipeline through the 1980s, 90s, and into the 2000s were Derek Ho, Tamayo Perry, Shawn Briley, Braden Dias, Liam McNamara, and Randall Paulson—If Wave of the Winter had existed back then, these guys would have been serious contenders year after year.<br /><br />@bradendias from Kauai, moved to Oahu in his late teens and quickly made a name for himself at Pipe. Within a few years he worked his way into the lineup and spent more than a decade charging North Shore swells with style and confidence.<br /><br />@_.shawnbriley._ North Shore-born and nephew of Owl Chapman, used his strength and front-foot power to drive through heavy sections and foam balls, getting spit out of some of the wildest barrels ever seen at Pipe.<br /><br />@liam__mcnamara started surfing Pipeline at just 15 in the mid-80s. With the lineup stacked, he pushed deep into the heavy zone (known as Wakita Peak), earning waves in one of the most dangerous sections of the reef.<br /><br />@paulson.randall coming from Honolulu, earned his place in the lineup by going steep and deep, hunting the same iconic barrels where the top guys held the line.<br /><br />Two legends who are no longer with us: Tamayo Perry, a true Pipeline warrior who spent more than 30 years mastering the break, and Derek Ho—world champion, Pipe Master, and the first Hawaiian world champion. His perfect 10 at the 1986 Pipe Masters remains one of the most iconic waves in Pipeline history.<br /><br />Decades from now these names will still be spoken with respect. Spewing. 18-year-old John John Florence and 26-year-old Dane Reynolds meet in Japan for Dear Suburbia, scoring what they both still swear are the best waves they’ve ever seen.<br /><br />“The perfect combination of power and shape,” says Dane. “It felt like you could do anything you wanted.”<br /><br />“It was barreling off the takeoff, and you came out with so much speed and just had this perfect bowl bending at you,” adds John.<br /><br />It was the first and only time they ever went on a trip together, and possibly the last time they talked.<br /><br />John chalks it up to them moving through time at different paces — John getting on tour the year after Dane had already left it behind. Dane dove into filmmaking, John grew into the world title chase.<br /><br />Now, 14 years later, both have left the tour. Both left the mainstream surf industry’s big payouts to launch businesses that speak to their own vision of what surfing should be. Both of them now reunite on a one-hour talk show, StabMic, to discuss all of it.<br /><br />Except, John’s on a boat. A fancy new one, too.<br /><br />There are, of course, many differences in their paths, different choices and conflicting visions of the surf industry. They get into it, though, talking about Dane’s time on tour and their shared aversion to certain aspects of competition.
