A central figure in Memphis Rap’s legendary second generation of the early 90s, producer, DJ and rapper Tommy Wright III cut a distinctive path – one that is as relevant today as 40 years ago.

Building on foundations built by local DJs such as DJ Spanish Fly, Tommy Wright and his label Street Smart Records helped define the increasingly menacing Memphis Rap sound, which sat apart from the well documented hip-hop scenes of the East and West Coast.

With raw, 808-heavy production and high-octane raps laced with wild lyrics, Tommy Wright and his peers galvanized a sound that continues to be interpolated, referenced, and sampled by everyone from amateur producers to the biggest artists in the world.

Tommy reflected on this era and his approach following his debut UK show at ORMSIDE Projects for Life is Beautiful.

Dubbed the “godfather of Memphis Rap,” pioneering producer and rapper DJ Spanish Fly created the city’s unique sound over 40 years ago. This laid the foundation for Southern rap and eventually, the rise of Atlanta trap – a sound that dominated worldwide for nearly a decade and transformed the mainstream music landscape. Today, this influence continues to resonate in contemporary phonk, Baile Funk, and rap music across the globe.

After a rare live set at London’s ORMSIDE Projects, hosted by life is beautiful records, DJ Spanish Fly explained how he created a sound that was a reflection of Memphis’ gritty reality, but also an escape from it.

Emerging from the depths of winter, the Spring/Summer 2026 campaign breaks through the binds of the past, as a new season comes into focus.

Shot by Hugo Campan, the campaign explores the initial disorientation of change: strained pupils encountering the day's first light; the halting pulse of a guitar that builds into a reverberating drone; fragments of new encounters that fade into hazy memories, yet linger in feeling.

The campaign film follows a group of restless figures from night to day, balancing moments of tension and release; contemplation and melancholy with a renewed sense of energy. This necessary friction sets the pace for what’s ahead: pushing things forward, transforming the languor of winter into something more solid, tangible. Something alive with movement.

The accompanying stills, which bear a textural quality, create an atmospheric play of light and shadow that reflects the transition of the seasons. A sense of tactility is present throughout, felt in the weight of what’s worn, the intimacy of an embrace, and the lingering after-image of a body in motion.

The Spring/Summer 2026 collection is available now at select global retailers and Carhartt WIP stores, as well as at carhartt-wip.com and on the Carhartt WIP App.

-----------

More from Carhartt WIP
Official website: https://www.carhartt-wip.com/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carharttwip/
TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@carharttwip

Carhartt WIP Radio – May 2026

"No country, no flag – outernational without a cause." The tagline runs across the releases and radio shows of Berlin-based musician ML, distilling how he listens to and makes music: with boundless curiosity, unanchored to any one scene or genre. He moves through that open territory as a musician, producer, journalist, broadcaster and DJ.

As a broadcaster, he co-founded Carhartt WIP Radio in 2008, steering the station from behind the mic and the programming desk. He also runs 150 Session, first on Radio Cómeme and now on NTS since 2009, drawing on experimental, electronic, minimal, dub, and beyond.

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, ML opens up his archive, playing an hour of his releases and collaborations, alongside some previously unheard material.
