No need to be independently wealthy or wait for retirement to surf your way around the world. This is the crux of "The Modern Guide to Surf Exploration”. You could be an engineer with a laptop, like Fernando Frances (Ep. 1) or an artist with paint and canvas like Bryce Baker (Ep. 2). Another option, as illustrated by the subject of our third episode, Avalon Starick, is to hone a useful craft that's valuable in many places. Starick's craft happens to be shaping surfboards, which she's done all over the world, connecting with like-minded folks and scoring some damn fine waves in the process. (Being a surf guide, which Starick also did, is another great way to score without having to spend.) <br /><br />"I realized I could blend work and surf travel," she said. "I knew it could be done, and I just had to work hard and figure out how I could make it happen. If you've got a hands-on skill, you can totally utilize it and find work while traveling by connecting people in your industry online beforehand — or just showing up in person and showing that you're eager to work." <br /><br /> Starick has good reason for this strategy. "You’re not gonna remember the times where you stayed at home and worked," she said. Watch NASA's 3D view of Hurricane Erin on August 16, 2025, at approximately 10:23Z (6:23 EST) east of Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.<br /><br />The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory satellite animation captures Erin’s internal structure and rainfall patterns around 10:23 UTC (6:23 a.m. EDT) on August 16, when the storm was located about 150 miles northeast of Anguilla.<br /><br />Data from the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) reveal bands of moderate rainfall (shown in orange) and heavier downpours (shown in red) wrapping around a well-defined eye on the western, southern, and eastern sides of the storm.<br /><br />Meanwhile, the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) provides a three-dimensional view of the storm’s precipitation.<br /><br />Frozen precipitation aloft is shaded in bluish gray, while rainfall intensity is shown in color.<br /><br />The DPR also highlights several towering convective cells rising above 10 km within the heavier rainbands, signaling intense thunderstorm activity.<br /><br />These features release large amounts of condensational heating near Erin’s core, a typical indicator of further strengthening.<br /><br />At the time of this GPM overpass, Erin had just reached Category 4 status, with the National Hurricane Center estimating maximum sustained winds of 130 mph.<br /><br />By 15:20 UTC (11:20 a.m. EDT), Erin intensified into a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 160 mph as it passed roughly 100 miles north of Anguilla in the northern Leeward Islands.<br /><br />Stay safe.
