On Wednesday, May 7th, Teahupo'o saw the first very solid swell of the season. It was very big, right on the line between paddle and tow, with both crews giving it their collective best. Turned out local Eimeo Czermak snagged the wave of the day, paddling -- arguably one of the biggest waves ever caught without a ski. Longtime local Tikanui Smith, who watched from the channel, said, "maybe one of the best paddle waves at Teahupoo." And we believe him. <br /><br />The swell itself, according to chief forecaster Kevin Wallis, was "the result of a strong but not crazy, eye-popping storm. But what it lacked in strength, it made up for in track and location. It moved almost directly at Tahiti over the last few days and the peak seas only occurred only 1000-1500 miles away. Close enough to create pumping surf, but not bad wind and weather."<br /><br />Wallis offered some more telling intel: "Perhaps the most interesting thing was the swell period — not long, 15-16 seconds, with the shorter swell period, which meant that the even the largest waves were at least somewhat approachable for the paddle crew. “I’m glad this is getting juiced up,” Dion told us of this offcut, “that was such an iconic little session. Vibes were so high.”<br /><br />A while back, Harry Bryant, Dion Agius, and Chippa Wilson flew to a solitary isle in the Pacific for Zipper and lucked into a hefty righthand behemoth that became the heavy metal-infused, ending section of the film.<br /><br />But after waking up from their session in the Octagon, the crew was driving around the island and noticed a fun wedge tucked between rocks with just enough room to sneak in a tubette and/or an air before running into dry reef.<br /><br />“It was my first trip to the island, we basically came straight off the plane into that mondo session at the big right,” Dion said, “I hadn’t surfed a wave over two feet for like five months. So the paddle out into a fucking 10 foot deep water right was pretty intimidating. So when we discovered that little left that was so much fun. Just a real weird little novelty wave.”<br /><br />Even for some of the world’s best surfers, it can be strange to deflower a random reef with no sign of being aforesurfed. “We weren’t even sure if it was a wave or if anyone had surfed it because were just kind of driving around and exploring and saw this perfect little left. It was super shallow but just as dreamy as you could imagine for a little wave. We were losing it, just having a time, fucking around. I mean, it was really small so you could only do little airs and find little tubes.
