“It gets to a point, where you can only beat yourself up mentally so much,” says Chris Joslin after the premiere of his latest video part, “Joyce.” Being human, we can only take so much which can be hard to remember when you are skating, mid-battle and on the cusp of victory. Add in factors like being in the streets, on a trip, in a foreign country and on a deadline… you can only hope your body and mind are in synch, ready to seal the deal.<br /><br />Still, even Chris Joslin (who is almost-certainly a mutant, super-human) has to draw the line somewhere. “It could happen any try, 'cause that’s skateboarding. And then you have to be like, ‘Alright, not today.’ It has to be that matter-of-fact.”<br /><br />As the clock was winding down on his final trip overseas filming for a part that was already more than a year in the making and more than a month spent skating in Barcelona, Spain… Joslin still needed a hammer. He set his sights on a 7-flat-7 double-set in Badalona (north end of Barcelona), known to be the biggest thing out there. You're watching Episode 7 of Stab Highway presented by Monster Energy, a series inspired by the late Transworld Surf's 'Cali Rally' and Thrasher’s ‘King of the Road’. <br /><br />Self-serious surfers, please check your bosu balls at the door. We’re here for a good time and a good time only.<br /><br />Here’s how it works:<br /><br />In Stab Highway Australia presented by Monster Energy, there are four teams with four surfers apiece. The teams are selected middle-school-gym-class-style by our captains, Holly Wawn, Pacha Light, Jaleesa Vincent, and Macy Callaghan.<br /><br />The other surfers include Shaun Manners, Noa Deane, Wade Goodall, Harry Bryant, Dakoda Walters, Reef Heazlewood, Dion Agius, Sheldon Simkus, Mackenzie Bowden, Chippa Wilson, Coby Perkovich, and Benny Howard.<br /><br />Once the teams are chosen, each of them will be given a booklet of 30 surf-related challenges that they must complete, or attempt to complete, within a 10-day period in the state of New South Wales. Stab High Japan, presented by Monster Energy, is a surf contest that celebrates the many different arts of flight. Rather than having competitors connect relatively similar directional changes for a score, the emphasis was on single, explosive aerial maneuvers.<br /><br />Our 2024 edition took place at PerfectSwell Shizunami in Shizunami, Japan, on Saturday, June 22nd, and Sunday, June 23rd, with a live broadcast beaming to the earth’s every corner.<br /><br />With support from YETI, there were three divisions this year: Mens, Ladybirds (15-and-under girls), and Bottle Rockets (15-and-under boys). Additionally, the Monster Air Award was won by the surfer who performed the most impactful air of the event, regardless of division.<br /><br />All of our competitors had several chances to land their best airs on PerfectSwell Shizunami’s ‘High Ball’ air section, which past Stab High winner Chippa Wilson has called, “probably the best section yet.” Surfers’ creativity will be expressed in the form of different grabs, rotations, altitudes and styles, so we brought a wide range of judges with aerial expertise to sort through it all, including Nathan Fletcher, Kolohe Andino, Dion Agius, Wade Goodall, and Lee Wilson.
