Experimentation drives innovation, and nine-time bodyboarding world champion Mike Stewart exemplifies this with his aptly named company, Science.
At 61, Stewart is pushing the boundaries of bodyboard design, focusing on his new "warp" concept.
The warp tail emerged from revisiting the bat tail design, adding two wings and a rounder configuration for a loose yet controlled feel.
Stewart’s process begins with creative problem-solving, sketching ideas to refine functionality, and then using CAD tools like SolidWorks for precision.
Prototypes are tested in diverse water conditions to evaluate their performance.
Despite similarities to surfboard and boat hull designs, bodyboards require unique testing—riding them.
Kelly Slater even noted the warp tail’s distinctive "shaka-looking" shape.
Stewart views innovation as a cycle of learning and adjustment.
He believes the warp tail offers exceptional responsiveness once mastered, representing the ongoing evolution of bodyboarding design.
