ABOUT THIS UNIQUE EVENT<br /><br />The Da Hui Backdoor Shootout is not a traditional surf contest. No person-versus-person heats. There’s eight shortboard teams with five surfers, each of which gets to surf the same amount of time over the waiting period at Pipe and Backdoor. The goal: get as barreled as possible. Team scores are all added together, the team with the most points wins. There’s also the individual winner, which is the person with the most points. Simple. Plus, SUP and Longboard divisions, as well as a Wahine Expression Session. Traditional? Nah. Fun to watch? “Hawaiian kine kind of day. 2 feet one moment, twenty feet the next.” – Bethany Hamilton<br /><br />The guarantees in life are death, taxes, and the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout scoring.<br /><br />The forecast for opening day was a lifeguard’s nightmare and a surfer’s dream. Small and clean in the morning, with each set getting bigger throughout the day—a recipe for tourists losing their sandals or, worse, their lives.<br /><br />The day started with the SUP and longboard divisions, which, as you’d imagine with a long-period swell at Pipe, was like trying to park a lifted Yota in a compact spot at Foodland.<br /><br />Every heat had a broken board and a wipeout reel to go with it. But in the longboard final, Pipeline put on its prettiest face as Kala DeSoto packed a 9.88 in the best display of longboard tube riding I’ve ever seen personally.<br />The action just kept getting crazier and crazier as a twenty-second interval W swell pulsed through the afternoon. For a while, there were no second-reef roll-ins, just mutant double-ups that had Pipe’s greatest stalwarts pin-dropping from the lip. Sinpei Horiguchi for Team Japan was guillotined, and like a warrior, he paddled back out after for more.<br /><br />Only one surfer would find the chip-in, and of all people, it was Bethany Hamilton. The conditions had deteriorated at that point, but the drop sent shockwaves through the crowd. The swell peaks tonight. We’re here for a good time and a good time only. <br /><br />Here’s how it works:<br /><br />In Stab Highway Australia presented by Monster Energy, there are four teams with four surfers apiece. The teams are selected middle-school-gym-class-style by our captains, Holly Wawn, Pacha Light, Jaleesa Vincent, and Macy Callaghan.<br /><br />The other surfers include Shaun Manners, Noa Deane, Wade Goodall, Harry Bryant, Dakoda Walters, Reef Heazlewood, Dion Agius, Sheldon Simkus, Mackenzie Bowden, Chippa Wilson, Coby Perkovich, and Benny Howard.<br /><br />Once the teams are chosen, each of them will be given a booklet of 30 surf-related challenges that they must complete, or attempt to complete, within a 10-day period in the state of New South Wales. Every team has the same exact challenges. <br /><br />At the end of the trip, the 4×30 challenges will be reviewed by a panel of esteemed judges — Ozzy Wright, Kai Neville, and Stab’s own Danny Johnson — who will decide which team performed them the best, the worst, and wherever in between for each specific task.
