It’s always strange when a great surf zone just kinda stops dead in its tracks, right when it’s supposed to be pumping. Just such a thing happened this winter along the renowned reefs of Victoria’s Surf Coast. The magical combo of long range SW swell and gusty offshore winds so typical of the area kept trying to spark up and not quite making it. Then in one week, right as the seasons swung into September, everything clicked. Cold winds, open skies, and a seemingly endless series of back-to-back swells poured down the reefs, stoking out everyone from a few handfuls of visitors to a vast array of very patient local surfers, who finally got the goods. And kinda wore themselves out in the process. Second only to wave quality, opportunity is the most key ingredient for ensuring a fair and entertaining contest. So that’s good, I guess.<br /><br />All 10 surfers have spotted getting warmed up at Lowers, some of which we captured yesterday. The Fall/Winter 2024 campaign unfolds in an empty, remote location, as daylight fades into night and the boundaries of reality begin to shatter.<br /><br />Everyday scenes are interrupted by fragments of the uncanny: A hand on fire. Figures cloaked in smoke. Battle axes and angel wings.
