Stab High is an atypical surf contest "mostly in the air" that celebrates the many different arts of flight. Rather than having competitors connect relatively similar directional changes for a score, they'll have to put all their chips on the table. This game is all about single maneuvers in the air.<br /><br />In 2024, Stab High will take place at Perfect Swell Shizunami, Japan, on June 22 & 23. This year, we’re excited to announce three divisions: Pro, Ladybirds (15-and-under girls), and Bottle Rockets (15-and-under boys). Additionally, the Monster Air award will be up for grabs without limitation to any division!<br /><br />They'll all face the Perfect Swell Shizunami's "High Ball" air section and have several chances to land their best airs. On March 23rd-24th, nowhere in the continental United States was better than a certain beachbreak in New York. A solid crew was assembled for the freezing-cold barrel-fest, we had our best filmers documenting the action dawn to dusk, we dropped a Good-Epic video a few days later, and everyone was stoked (once they warmed up).<br /><br />But that turned out to be just the beginning of another interesting story. <br /><br />Always looking for creative ways to present and promote things, our social media team spotted a nice lil barrel by Will Skudin and noticed something cool — a bodyboarder kicking hard towards the whitewater to allow Skudin unfettered access through the tube. This was one of the finest examples of proper surf etiquette that we’d seen in some time, so naturally, we shared the clip (https://www.instagram.com/p/C4_ZdVYSfRJ/) on Instagram to highlight the feat, and perhaps educate the uneducated.<br /><br />Turns out, we struck a cord. Comments poured in immediately that celebrated the unknown bodyboarder. Strangers offered to buy him a beer, writing stuff like, “That’s how it’s done” and “There’s faith for the surf community, love to see it!” After all, paddling away from any surfer’s path is common sense. This bodyboarder just did what he was supposed to. He wasn’t exactly a hero. But social media made him one anyway. The post was viewed two million times. <br /><br />A couple days later, we did another post with Skudin to help find this mysterious bodyboarder so Skudin could flow him some surf gear. (https://www.instagram.com/p/C5EbsLJPSaX/) Nothing. Not one person on Instagram knew who he was, which is pretty remarkable these days. A couple weeks later, during another swell at the same beach, Skudin’s buddy Austin Gibbons spotted the guy in the water. Turns out, his name is John Blanc, and when it’s pumping he gets up at 4am, drives from Connecticut, parks in the corner of the parking lot, paddles out alone and gets barreled. That is the simple mission we like to work towards and there’s nothing we’d rather do. Myself, Talus Turk, and Hayden Zablotny moved down to the Utah desert to pursue riding bikes together. Since then we’ve built a dirt jump spot called 17 Palms, a fully hand built dirt jump line that is now 3 years in the making. Nowadays, it has became a staple in the Dirt jump scene in Southern Utah.
