“That was the craziest feeling!” says Eden Edwards.
Eden looked a tiny bit uncertain when she paddled into the lineup at Cloudbreak, Fiji this morning. And well she might. The fabled reef was bombing with the first major swell of 2024, and in the water were some of the most formidably skilled surfers ever to set foot in wax — Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Ian Walsh, Nathan “Hog” Hedge, and Dean Morrison, not to mention Eden’s boyfriend, Balaram Stack.
Balaram got a really nice one and came out with a smile on his face. Team Surfline encouraged him to tuck in a bit tighter on the inside ledge. “Yeah I will,” he said, “just want to get the girl a wave first.” Minutes later, Eden got this absolutely glorious thing from way outside, landed nicely into the base, and out-barrelled everyone in the lineup. You could have heard the cheering from Tavarua, miles down the line.
