But thatā€™s exactly whatā€™s happening, as the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout in Memory of Duke Kahanamoku returns to the Banzai Pipeline with their tried-and-true, non-elimination team format. <br /><br />Surfers are entered into eight teams, either by sponsor, neighborhood, peer group, or some other affiliation. And competitively, it's definitely on. But, say event organizers, the whole thing is intended to ā€œfoster a sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and community spirit among the participants.ā€<br /><br />The event ā€œemphasizes traditional Hawaiian surfing style and places importance on style, power, and respect for the ocean. Surfers are judged not only on their technical maneuvers but also on their overall approach, wave selection, and ability to navigate the tuberides and come out with control and style.ā€<br /><br />The holding period is from January 4th-16th, and in addition to the main team comp there will be individual Duke Specialty Events with men's and women's divisions in longboard, SUP and bodysurfing. The full spectacle. That was day two of the best teams contest ever. Eight hours of intense surfing pushed Da Huiā€™s Backdoor Shootout through two full rounds, and sets up a real shootout some time in the next ten days.<br /><br />It was way bigger today. The swell moved as predicted, with a touch more north angle, and wash-throughs were a standard feature. Pipe veered from near-unsurfability to amazing five-minute bursts of fire. Wild rides from Benji Brand, Jamie Oā€™Brien, Makana Pang, John Florence, Seth Moniz (again!), Maikai McNamara, and two absolute gems late in the day from Billy Kemper and Balaram Stack ā€” all right here in the highlights ā€” were plucked from the craziness with great skill and daring.<br /><br />In between all the bombing, we saw an amazing display of another water skill altogether. After an inadvertent jet-ski roll left the ski capsized and drifting in the middle of the surf zone, the operator Brandon Martin swam clear, waited for the ski to right itself, and re-engaged, getting the ski back into safe water within seconds. Take it from us, this was next level timing and water knowledge. Not for nothing is the Hawaiian Water Patrol renowned as worldā€™s best.<br /><br />Two more days of surfing are available to the contest during its waiting period, which extends to January 16.
