2023 Quemao Class | Surfing: Day 1 Highlights

The first day of competition at the 2023 Lanzarote Quemao Class ended with a bang in the Canary Islands.

The 8th edition of the prestigious tube-riding invitational greeted surfers with spectacular conditions.

Joan Duru and Marc Lacomare have set the level by getting 10-point waves from the judging panel.

The French surfers showed they knew this wave well and how to get the most out of today's conditions.

"I'm glad to be back. I love this wave and the people of Lanzarote," commented Marc Lacomare.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to compete again in this event. The conditions have been spectacular all day long, and I was able to catch two good waves in my heat."

"This wave is very intense, very powerful. It forms a huge tube. It's a sensation like no other."

One of the standouts was also the Basque Aritz Aranburu, who advanced to the quarterfinals and is "very grateful to be back and still invited to compete. Today has been a classic Lanzarote Quemao Class."

"We were all nervous, with butterflies in the stomach. This wave is very powerful, and you have to take it seriously, respect the conditions, and enjoy it.

"I've been coming to Lanzarote for about 25 years. I know the island quite well and am very fond of it".

Yael Peña from Tenerife and the Italian Francisco Porcella are also advancing.

"The conditions were a bit more complicated now, but we just had to tighten the screws a bit and be more confident when choosing the wave," said Yael Peña.

"For tomorrow, try to catch the good waves because in the end, whether you pass or not, if you catch a good wave and enjoy it, you'll be left with a good taste in your mouth."

Brazilian Pedro Calado could not keep going in the competition, but he's pleased about the opportunity to compete in the Lanzarote Quemao Class.

"There are few places in the world as special as Lanzarote, with incredible waves. I couldn't win my heat, but with these conditions and this opportunity, you end up just as happy," he adds.
