Founded in 2017 by four individuals, The Great Bubble Barrier is a Dutch social enterprise that developed an effective technology to stop plastic pollution in rivers before it flows into our oceans using bubbles.<br /><br />Each year, 1.8 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans via rivers.<br /><br />Once lost at sea, plastic is almost impossible to retrieve and degrades into smaller particles.<br /><br />The Great Bubble Barrier's mission, therefore, is to stop it closer to the source without interfering with marine life or boat traffic.<br /><br />After five years of R&D and pilots, the team developed the world's first Bubble Barrier technology to capture plastic in rivers effectively.<br /><br />The first long-term Bubble Barrier was installed in the canals of Amsterdam in November 2019, followed by Katwijk in 2022.<br /><br />More cities in the Netherlands and all over the world are reaching out to implement this solution in their rivers.<br /><br />How It Started<br /><br />Three of the co-founders, Anne Marieke Eveleens, Francis Zoet, and Saskia Studer, are lifelong sailors and friends who constantly came across plastic at sea on their sailing trips.<br /><br />When they were having a beer after one of their trips, they started mulling over ways to tackle plastic pollution.<br /><br />They dreamt of a solution that would target plastic but wouldn't hinder ship traffic or fish migration.<br /><br />The bubbles in their drinks eventually sparked their imagination, and their concept and prototype were awarded.<br /><br />Soon, they started testing and developing their first prototypes further.<br /><br />At the same time, Philip Ehrhorn was developing his own Bubble Barrier in Germany.<br /><br />During a course in Environmental Engineering, he visited a wastewater treatment plant where he saw bubbles being used to aerate the water basin.<br /><br />The plastics that were flushed down the toilet were pushed to the side of the basin.<br /><br />So, he wondered: "Why can't we use the power of bubbles to capture plastic in rivers?"<br /><br />Eventually, the four of them met. They decided to join forces, and together, they co-founded The Great Bubble Barrier.<br /><br />How It Works<br /><br />1. We create a bubble curtain by pumping air through a perforated tube on the bottom of the waterway: the Bubble Barrier.<br /><br />2. The Bubble Barrier creates an upward current that directs plastic to the surface.<br /><br />3. By placing the Bubble Barrier diagonally across the river, the natural flow of the water will push the plastic waste to the side and into the catchment system.<br /><br />4. Once the plastic has been trapped, it is collected, removed, and processed by the local waste management.<br /><br />The unique advantage of the Bubble Barrier is that it covers the entire width and depth of a river, works 24/7, and doesn't interfere with fish migration or ship traffic.<br /><br />Impact and Ambition<br /><br />The Great Bubble Barrier successfully implemented the first-ever system in Amsterdam to capture plastics 24/7 using a bubble curtain.<br /><br />This unique solution reaches the entire width and depth of a waterway without hindering the passage of fish or ship traffic.<br /><br />The Bubble Barrier has already been operational since 2019.<br /><br />It continuously catches debris and contributes to plastic pollution monitoring, thereby preventing marine pollution.<br /><br />In previous pilots, the Bubble Barrier achieved an 86 percent catch rate, and in Amsterdam, we have collected about 2.7 tonnes of dry debris to date.<br /><br />That is the equivalent of 85 kilograms each month or 8,000 pieces.<br /><br />In 2022, the team deployed the first Bubble Barrier in a river mouth in Katwijk, The Netherlands, stopping plastic 1 km before it flowed into the ocean.<br /><br />The team is preparing to implement more Bubble Barriers across the world in 2023.<br /><br />Footage: @TheGreatBubbleBarrier<br /><br />Subscribe to SurferToday on YouTube<br />🔔 http://bit.ly/2TSO2be<br /><br />Online Surf Shop<br />🏄🏻‍♂️ https://bit.ly/online-surf-shop
