After a summer of heated qualifiers, the Vans Shop Riot Finals have returned. In partnership with Spitfire, Oakley and Stance, the 13th edition of the Finals landed for the first time at Manchester's Graystone Action Sports to crown this year’s best skate shop team in Europe. <br /><br />For two days, the 13 best Skate Shop teams of the continent battled across different terrains and obstacles. First, they had a cash for tricks session on a mystery obstacle designed by Skateboard Café. Things got even more heated as the teams moved on to the Riot Finals contest in the street course. To wrap things up, the contest came to a close with a heavy Best Trick Bowl Jam, in partnership with Spitfire. At the end, it was Venero who came out on top, taking the crown for the third time in a row and becoming the first ever shop to achieve a three-peat. <br /><br />The legendary “Antihero graphics duder” Todd Francis joined us from LA and brought the stoke with an exhibition of his work and original Shop Riot artwork that took place across the weekend, paying tribute to the event’s rich and riotous history. 18-year-old Pismo beach lifeguard Tyler Balsillie was one of a dozen or so who chased last week's North Pacific opener from Maui to Maverick's -- his first time. (Though he had surfed both spots before.) As the swell was building at Pe'ahi, he endured one of the most dramatic wipeouts of the day: a freefall, over-the-falls, board-breaker. The following morning, on his first wave, a near repeat, minus the board breaking part. After pulling both CO2 cartridges on his vest, he got picked up by the ski and headed back for more. "I was like man, I flew five hours here, spent all my money, I gotta get The Wave," he said. <br />A while later, The Wave comes in. He scratches into it, fully committed. "I try to knife in, and the wind airdrops me 20 feet top to bottom," he said. "I'm not even surfing at this point -- I'm skydiving." Balsillie sticks the drop -- a gravity-defying feat in itself -- but is quickly gobbled up by a mountain of whitewater. Gets held under for two waves, pops up for 15 seconds and is steamrolled by another one before he's picked up by a ski and dropped off on the rocks, boardless. "I was bummed, that was gonna be my board for Mav's," he said. "But they found it floating in the channel, totally undamaged. So I loaded up and headed to the airport." <br />Fast forward to the next morning. It's hot and sunny and glassy and Balsillie (who first surfed Mav's at 16 years old) hops on a ski around 10am. "Compared to Pe'ahi, which had 20 mph offshore winds, Maverick's seemed like this super calm, slabby wave," he said. Mick Fanning surfed, Steph Gilmore surfed, Joel Parkinson surfed, the entire Snapper Rocks Boardriders open division surfed. Thousands of people surfed! And all thanks to a rogue combination of weather systems, including the first tropical cyclone — not just of the season, but of almost any October ever, since records began. After going category five over Vanuatu, ex-TC Lola showed up in Australian waters just in time to combine with a big cold gale from way down in the Southern Ocean. The resulting swell delivered two days of much-needed waves to some of the world’s finest sand point-breaks, and to many of the world’s happiest surfers. Hitchhiking can go one of two ways: surprisingly good or really quite bad. <br /><br />There’s no inbetween.<br /><br />Episode three of S.U.R.F involves a surf contest that starts far from the beach in the windy hills of Byron Bay, with each surfer being placed on different spots along the road. <br /><br />Using nothing more than their thumb and a case of Byron Bay Brewery beer they need to convince the strangers whizzing past to get them to the surf. <br /><br />Every wave counts and the comp ends 30 mins after the last surfer arrives.

Justine Dupont was recognized with premier accolades at the debut New Big Wave Challenge awards in Nazaré, Portugal.<br /><br />The renowned French wave rider bagged the titles for Biggest Wave, Ride of the Year, and Top Female Surfer.<br /><br />Her triumphant wave at the Cortes Bank, an isolated seamount 100 miles from the Californian coast, was captured last January for the HBO Documentary Series "100 Foot Wave."<br /><br />Experts estimated the wave's face to be around 75 feet, making it a potential contender for the Guinness World Record.<br /><br />"It's nice to once again experience a beautiful evening dedicated to big wave surfing. I hope the event will last and continue to grow. Many thanks to Bill Sharp for starting it again," shared Dupont.<br /><br />Hawaii's own Nathan Florence also had a standout performance, securing two Oscar-like awards for Ride of the Year and Top Male Surfer.<br /><br />The wave Florence mastered at Mullaghmore Head, Ireland, was voted as the season's finest for 2022/2023 by a group of 200 surf connoisseurs through a confidential vote.<br /><br />There was a tie in the men's Biggest Wave category: Nic Von Rupp's wave at Nazaré was judged on par with the one Shaun Walsh conquered at Jaws, Maui.<br /><br />The Paddle Accolades were awarded to Chacha Ibarra at Punta de Lobos in Chile and Laura Enever, who surfed a monumental wave on Oahu's North Shore last January, potentially setting another Guinness World Record.<br /><br />Young talent Ned Hart from Dunsmore, Western Australia, was acknowledged as the Emerging Star for his outstanding performance at Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania when he was merely 16.<br /><br />Shipsterns also gave Danny Griffiths the title of Wipeout of the Year.<br /><br />This New Big Wave Challenge event was special as, after a gap of three years, it once again offered a stage for the best in big wave surfing to shine.<br /><br />The event's visionary, Bill Sharp, expressed his elation.<br /><br />"Big wave surfing once again has a platform where the surfers, the photographers, and the enthusiasts can unite to celebrate the pinnacle of the sport," the founder Bill Sharp articulated.<br /><br />"The overwhelming support and success of this inaugural event has left me overjoyed.
