Skating an airport is something most skateboarders only dream of but rarely get to experience.<br /><br />The ordinary traveler sees a dull baggage claim, whereas a skateboarder sees a perfect ledge.<br /><br />For the second consecutive year, Red Bull and New York Design and Construction (NYDAC) gave the Old New Orleans airport an edgy upgrade, turning escalators into ramps and quiet hallways into a skateboarding paradise for amateur and professionals alike.<br /><br />In short, it's a video game brought to life.<br /><br />The Old MSY closed its doors to travelers in 2019, but on April 15-16, Red Bull athlete and project visionary Jake Wooten was joined by a stacked roster of professional skateboarders, including X Games gold medalist Alex Sorgente, Olympians Brighton Zeuner and Vincent Matheron, Tony Hawk Pro Skater game character Kareem Campbell, and more.<br /><br />The crew dropped in from a jet bridge onto an active tarmac and caught air in the Parabola Park, set against the eye-catching mid-century glass arch in Concourse C.<br /><br />"Everything I've seen here has blown my mind," said Campbell.<br /><br />"From the course to the tarmac, to the Red Bull plane and the jam session... it's unreal. It's something I don't think anyone can recreate, except in a video game."<br /><br />In addition to the professional roster, eight crews of amateur skaters from seven states filled the formerly desolate halls with the sounds of ollies, grinds, and pure excitement.<br /><br />Each team was comprised of 4-5 skaters and one filmer and represented cities including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Atlanta, Birmingham, Tupelo, the Florida Panhandle, Philadelphia, and Nashville; last year's winning crew.<br /><br />Support Your Favorite Crew <br /><br />Each of the participating teams submitted a two-minute video compilation for a fan-sourced vote.<br /><br />Voting opened May 10 and ran through May 27.<br /><br />Red Bull has announced the Ruckus Skate Shop riders, composed of skaters from Baton Rouge and Lafayette, as the overall winning crew for Red Bull Terminal Takeover 2022.<br /><br />As winners of the project, Ruckus was awarded $5,000 for supporting their local skate scene.<br /><br />"I couldn't believe we were able to do Red Bull Terminal Takeover the first time," said Wooten.<br /><br />"It was beyond my imagination. Being able to do it again is an opportunity I would never miss out on. Seeing the faces of everyone who walks in solidifies the reason why we're doing this for the community."<br /><br />Transforming an airport into a Skate Park<br /><br />NYDAC converted the once-abandoned airport into a lively park, complete with four unique course designs and features <br />conducive to different styles of riding.<br /><br />Build-out by-the-numbers:<br /><br />37,000 pounds of ramp materials;<br />3 tractor-trailer loads of supplies;<br />12-person build crew;<br />3 weeks of pre-build with only 4 days to assemble the parks on-site; <br />Parabola Park;<br />The parabola was the hero location with its stunning pre-existing architecture. The NYDAC build team modified the escalators for skaters to roll down and added a simple but technical A-frame with a rail and a four-sided pyramid for skaters to jump over. The marquee feature for the Parabola Park was a custom-built 8ft quarter pipe, with 6ft wedges on both sides, providing local skaters a pro level course;<br />"DIY" Ticketing Counter (New);<br /><br />The ticketing counter utilized many of the existing features of an airport, including benches, airport signage, a golf cart, countertops, and more.<br /><br />Skaters put their creative juices to work, each designing their own unique street-style obstacles as part of their video edits.<br /><br />Baggage Claim <br /><br />The baggage claim section brought every skater's video game fantasy to life, as the carousel covered in plywood created a space for the sport to go where it hadn't gone before.<br /><br />Carpet and rubber were no match for the build team, who added rails, ledges, and ramps - transforming the monotonous belt system into a playground for the imagination, complete with rideable kiosks and countertops.<br /><br />Concourse D <br /><br />Concourse D mimicked a runway built for speed, offering skaters a long hallway and a smooth surface for pushing.<br /><br />The crews skated the airport's natural infrastructure, in addition to ledges in the form of kiosks, newsstands, kicker ramps, and more.<br /><br />Tarmac Jam Session <br /><br />Skaters were treated to the ultimate surprise upon arrival at Red Bull Terminal Takeover.<br /><br />At the conclusion of the park reveal, the eight crews were guided down a jet bridge to a 24ft wide, 5ft tall mini ramp built on the active MSY tarmac.<br /><br />The skaters were joined by the pros for an open skate session overlooking the runway as commercial planes passed by in the distance.<br /><br />To turn it up a notch, Red Bull aerobatic pilot Kevin Coleman stunned the crowd with three low knife-edge passes in his Extra 300 plane 15ft over the mini ramp.<br /><br />Despite Kevin's 3500 in-flight hours across 13 different countries, this demonstration was a first for the sole American Aero GP1 pilot.
