The 2021 World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King kicked off with the first rounds of the junior division.<br /><br />Fifty-eight young riders took off on the infamous El Frontón wave in Gáldar, Gran Canaria, Spain.<br /><br />One of the highlights of this year's edition is the crowning of the junior world bodyboarding champion in a single event.<br /><br />The first two rounds of competition were highly contested, with the local riders making it very difficult for the visitors - the Spanish want the world title to stay at home.<br /><br />Among the athletes from Gran Canaria, a 9.17-point wave catapulted Abner Machín to the top of the rankings, with a total two-wave score of 12.34.<br /><br />But he is followed closely by another Canarian, Gabriel Molina, who locked in an overall score of 12.10 points, and David Pérez from Tenerife, who won the Sintra Portugal Pro.<br /><br />Bodyboarders from Peru, Chile, Hawaii, Portugal, Romania, and Brazil will certainly not make things easy for the locals and are ready to take on the crown.<br /><br />The main event kicks off with the men's division on October 20, 2021.<br /><br />The world's best bodyboarders - 83 riders - will be battling for the prestigious trophy and total prize money of $60,000.<br /><br />Former world champions Pierre-Louis Costes, Amaury Lavernhe and Dave Hubbard, as well other stars such as Lionel Medina, last year's champion, Borja Granados, Jonathan Vega, Alejandro Barbosa, and Kevin Orihuela, are all ready for the ultimate showdown.
