Desert Point is known for its long barrels, super shallow reef, and generally being an intense heavy wave. So when we noticed a surfer heading out without a leash, it didn't seem like the best idea. Last summer, SNOWBOARDER headed to Mount Hood with Danny Kass and Isabella Gomez to put a selection of 2021’s performance-built, fall-line fashion to the test. While staying warm, dry, and comfortable is the overriding purpose of our outerwear when we’re spending time outside, the following companies have perfectly merged function and tech with attentive design, ensuring ample style in addition to high-level performance. Whether your personal aesthetic is casually understated or bold and stand-out, there is a coat to meet all your needs. In this edition of SNOWBOARDER’s Coat Check, check out a few of our favorite 2021 jackets, parkas, and pullovers that feature plenty of style and will cover you in all conditions.

Tech Highlights:
- Powered by REPREVE Recycled Fibers
- O'Neill Firewall Magma Technology
- O'Neill Blue 120/100 insulation
- Critically Taped Seams

MSRP: $230
www.oneill.com

O’Neill says:
A performance jacket loaded with features without forgetting about sustainability.

SNOWBOARDER says:
O’Neill has instilled their trademark considered style and attention to technical details in the APO Jacket, but what really sets this performance piece apart is its dedication to sustainability throughout its design. The APO is stormproof, powered by REPREVE recycled fibers, a material made out of plastic bottles and other recycled items that is both waterproof and breathable. The APO also provides ample warmth and an abundance of comfort no matter how low temperatures plummet thanks to O’Neill Blue 120/100 Insulation¬¬—also made of sustainable fabrics. The high-tech warmth of this all-season coat gets a mega-boost from O’Neill’s proprietary Firewall Magma Technology, a thermal energy-absorbing pattern that retains more body heat than a conventional lining. What does this mean? The bottom line is that no matter how low that mercury drops, or how fierce the wind whips, this jacket will keep you comfortably charging forward.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

Each year as summer turns into fall, we can rest assured that our favorite companies will release a selection of snowboards designed to enhance our experience on hill. At this point, with the abundance or shapes, lengths, camber profiles, edge and sidecut variations, core designs, and more sustainable materials at an all-time high, it’s possible to get precisely the board you are looking for, whether you’re interested in towrope park laps, early morning pow runs, holding an edge on hardpack, or all of the above and then some. From true twins designed for the jib line to big-nosed powder guns ready to drop in post-storm, to shore and wide decks that are designed for a bit of it all, the hardest decision may be whether you want to add to your selection of situation-specific boards or if a quiver killer is in the cards for your season—maybe the answer is both. To help get you started in your search of what board to add to your stash this winter, here are fourteen of our favorites that run the gamut in size, shape, and style.

Feature Highlights:
• Gender Agnostic Sizing
• Directional Camber
• The Channel
• Recycled Sintered WFO base

Sizes: 144, 149, 154, 159, 164
MSRP: USD $549.95
Website: www.burton.com

Burton says:
Pow chasing floater for extra fluff float from first chair to last lap.

SNOWBOARDER says:
New for 2021, Burton has expanded on its beloved Family Tree line with gender agnostic sizing. Each Family Tree board is available in extended lengths that are specifically tailored for each particular size—i.e., smaller boards feature lighter weaves of glass to accommodate more petite riders while keeping flex appropriate and consistent. Offered in sizes ranging from 144 to 164, the Burton Family Tree Big Gulp is a directional deck built to realize your powder-chasing dreams. Deep sidecut and 12mm of taper make this wider board nimble, enabling you to easily navigate any pow-laden terrain. While the Big Gulp prioritizes float in the deep stuff, it is equally at home in a mixed bag of conditions thanks to Directional Camber—rocker in the nose for lift, combined with traditional camber underfoot for response and stability. Of course, the Big Gulp is endowed with Burton’s proprietary Channel system, which makes it simple to dial in the perfect stance and is compatible with all major bindings. Ridden by lauded Powder Hound Mikey Rencz, the Big Gulp is a definite go when you’re stacking free refills, but we recommend grabbing it for hotlapping between storms, too.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

The Rampage comes in an iconic, blunt shape, a true twin with centered stance that provides quick, freestyle maneuverability and stability on take-offs and touchdowns. Kemper’s Park Camber combines traditional camber under both feet with rocker between the bindings and on the nose and tail for the ideal combination of snap, pop, playfulness, and edge hold. To put it simply, the Rampage is equally locked and loaded for jumps, rails, and transition. New for 2021, the Rampage has been upgraded with polyurethane sidewalls that increase dampness on landings and further help the board to cut smoothly through chunder and hold an edge on hardpack. Oh, and did we mention it’s ridden by Kevin Jones? Pick your favorite Rampage style from the line of retro graphics or select Jones’ signature design. A 5 out of 10 flex contributes to the versatility of the Ram-page, making it ideal for any feature you’re feeling, from cheese wedges to multi-kinks.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

The Nya is made of 3-Layer Gore-Tex C-KNIT, which is an advanced membrane that keeps moisture out while remaining ultra-breathable. In addition, this Hailey Langland-backed jacket employs Volcom’s top-of-the-line insulation tech, TDS, or Thermal Defense System, an infrared 3-layer lining system comprised of strategically placed RDS down thermal panels. To put it simply, Volcom has added high-tech insulation where you need it most in order to keep the Nya warm, lightweight, and sans bulk. Volcom has loaded the Nya with all of their team-favorite features, too, including a new hinged hood, fully taped seams, and an ergonomic fit with a drop tail. The brand’s patented Zip Tech jacket-to-pant system keeps the heat in and the snow out, while Face Tech, a facemask built into the hood of the jacket makes sure you always have easily accessible protection from sun, wind, and snow. Last summer, SNOWBOARDER headed to Mount Hood with Danny Kass and Isabella Gomez to put a selection of 2021’s performance-built, fall-line fashion to the test. While staying warm, dry, and comfortable is the overriding purpose of our outerwear when we’re spending time outside, the following companies have perfectly merged function ...

• Long Nose Twin
• Set-Back Stance
• Twin Wave Form Core
• I Carbon

Sizes: 151.5, 156.5, 161
MSRP: $579
Website: www.simscollective.com

SIMS says:
Looks like fun, feels even better. That’s the Nub. A progressive directional shape marked by smooth-turning, conventional camber and a setback stance that offers a multitude of options for all-mountain and all-terrain adaptability. From powder pat-downs to high speed laps, the Nub goes.

SNOWBOARDER says:
Backed by a bevy of the most stylish boarders in the mountains, including Keegan Valaika and John Jackson, the SIMS Nub is designed for those who want a ride that will excel at high speeds, in fresh snow, and when navigating creative features. The Nub boasts a progressive directional shape that, when paired with traditional camber, makes for smooth and nimble turns, whether you’re riding hardpack, groomers, or spring slush. It’s great in powder, too, as the set-back stance puts you in the sweet spot of the sidecut and increases float. The Twin Wave Foam Core is made up of slight variations in core thickness underfoot for a fine-tuned flex that is powerful and energetic, rocketing you in and out of turns and keeping the Nub incredibly nimble regardless of what you’re riding. I Carbon further contributes to the Nub’s agility by amplifying pop and power while remaining lightweight. If you’re looking for a board that will excel all over the mountain, whether you’re laying into deep cuts, checking off powdery cliff lines, or ripping through the trees, trust the board ridden by Scott Blum and Shuhei Sato to deliver the goods in all conditions.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

The Weston Hatchet is that board, designed to be ridden shorter and wider than normal as its increased surface area and reduced length ensure a nimble and buoyant ride. On days that lack the fresh stuff, this directional twin is an all-mountain driver, featuring Weston’s S Weave Carbon, which is woven strategically through the board’s core and provides plenty of snap and responsiveness on groomers or variable snowpack. Traditional camber between the bindings and rocker on the nose and tail further enhances pop and playfulness, while the Electra Sintered Base is durable and fast. As a bonus, the maple veneer topsheet of this Rocky Mountain-designed board features original artwork by Colorado-based artist John Fellow. The bottom line is that the Weston Hatchet is a smooth and spirited ride that despite its smaller sizing isn’t short on power. If you’re looking for a board that will excel all-season long, don’t split hairs, pick up the Hatchet.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

Take this thing from powder to corduroy for some serious turns and you’ll be just as stoked on the side hits, too. In addition, we wanted to create a topsheet that looks great on a snowboard, but could just as easily be hung on a wall as a piece of art.

SNOWBOARDER says:
Right out of the gate, if a powder board is backed by Gigi Rüf, you can feel confident that it’s going to perform when you’re in the steep and deep. This is definitely true for the Slash Vertical, which combines buoyancy with response to handle any terrain you decide to drop into. Built in float-friendly, unisex sizing, the Vertical has a Mild Tapered Swallowtail shape which allows the board to sink naturally for an easier, more balanced riding position in fresh snow. Slash’s Float Camber—traditional camber from front foot to tail—works with the board’s shape for precise movement, solid edge hold, consistent suspension, and plenty of pop. In addition, the Vertical’s ability in powder is further enhanced by the 3D Early Rise nose, which employs a 3D bevel that lifts the board’s edges, setting back contact points for additional float, as well as stability when landing. When it comes to snowy days, the Slash Vertical is an all-around ripper for blower turns, pillow lines, and rooster tail slashes.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

For 2021, it is clear that the boot and binding makers in snowboarding have collectively put their best foot forward by putting the experience of your feet at the forefront of their dedicated designs. Comfort, customization, and control are paramount in this selection of our favorite new bindings and boots, and after a week at Mount Hood putting each piece of gear through the paces at Timberline Resort, we can confidently say that each brand’s meticulous technology and features work together cohesively in pursuit of the best carving experience possible. Staying connected to your board is about much more than tightening a few screws—quick response and long-lasting comfort come down to the cohesiveness of your boot, bindings, and board. So, check out the 2021 edition of SNOWBOARDER’s Two Feet of Fresh and perhaps you will find the boots and bindings that will give your season a leg up, even when you’re going downhill.

Tech Highlights:
- Step On Outsole
- BOA H4 Coiler Closure with Zonal Closure
- Impact S Insole and White Liner

MSRP: $349.95
Website: www.dcshoes.com/snow

DC says:
The ultimate combination of comfort and convenience is finally here.

SNOWBOARDER says:
For 2021, DC Snowboarding has become the first brand to collaborate with Burton on their Step On program, combining the hallmark out-of-the-box comfort of their popular Control boot with the quick convenience of Step On. DC’s first foray into facilitating more laps via easier boot-into-binding entry is the Control Step On, a medium-flex boot that delivers equal support and response no matter the terrain. In addition to its newfound expediency thanks to the addition of the Step On Outsole, the Control Step On prioritizes comfort, featuring DC’s premium White Liner, which combines EVA memory foam and high-rebound, heat-moldable EVA with thermal-regulating fleece for a cushy ride that will keep your feet warm even on the coldest days. The Impact S Insole provides support and protects from impact just like your favorite skate shoe. Responsiveness and boardfeel are emphasized thanks to the Dual-Zone BOA H4 Coiler Closure that allows you to dial in the perfect fit and easily make adjustments in between runs. While the Control Step On works in all conditions, we recommend it especially for powder days, when DC’s heritage of comfortable, ready-to-ride boots, combined with the fast-lapping ability of Step On will let you stay out all day, stacking more laps than ever before.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

Tested and approved by Iikka Backstrom and Torstein Horgmo, the ASAP is an essential throwback, an easy-to-wear pullover, and the SE ups the style quotient by taking bold color blocking straight into the future present. DC’s Weather Defense 10k nails the sweet spot between resisting precipitation and providing ample breathability, while critically taped seams provide additional defense against moisture and cold temps. The 2-layer shell is versatile, too—add layers and it’s good to go in the cold, or throw it on over a T-shirt and you’re ready for spring riding. It’s this adaptability—plus the classic style—that will make the ASAP Anorak a steady go-to all winter. DC has further upped the ante including this pullover in their Transitors Collection. DC Transitors pieces are designed for easy packability, making it simple to get your gear together when it’s time to head to the mountain, whether you’re going across town or across the country. High tech and lightweight, this binding is at home on the feet of individuals who prize quick and comfortable response that elevates their boot-to-board connection. In order to accomplish this, the Highlander employs Salomon’s popular Shawdowfit Technology, a soft heel cup design that offers a natural connection and reduces pressure points, while allowing weight leveraging that enhances turning, tweaking, and pressing. The Minima 3D Highback is a durable, 3D-molded highback that has fine-tuned power and perfect flex. Canted footbeds feature Salomon’s lightest and softest EVA for cushioning and comfort, too. In this edition of SNOWBOARDER’s Coat Check, check out a few of our favorite 2021 jackets, parkas, and pullovers that feature plenty of style and will cover you in all conditions.

Tech Highlights:
- O'Neill Firewall Magma
- 80/60 Thinsulate insulation
- O'Neill 10K Hyperdry Technology
- Detachable Snow Gaiter

MSRP: $200
www.oneill.com

O’Neill says:
Sleek design mixing bold with camo for a performance jacket that will keep you staying out riding longer.

SNOWBOARDER says:
O’Neill rider Sebastien Toutant grew up riding in the harsh climate of Quebec, making it safe to say that if he stands behind a jacket, you can count on total all-weather performance. Case in point, his preference for the O’Neill Texture Jacket, which builds on O’Neill’s commitment to function with elevated style. The Texture has just the right amount of pop, with considered colorblocking that’s subtly stated. It’s not all show though—the Texture’s smooth style is backed by ample tech. The Texture features O’Neill’s Firewall Magma, a thermal energy-absorbing pattern that retains more body heat than a conventional lining, keeping you toasty even on the coldest days. This is coupled with synthetic 80/60 Thinsulate insulation, which is thin, light, and of course, warm. 10k Hyperdry Technology plus critically taped seams repels precipitation, and the addition of an inner storm placket provides further insulation. When temps begin to climb, blast open the Texture’s side vents, and stay cool as winter begins to thaw.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

Last summer, SNOWBOARDER headed to Mount Hood with Danny Kass and Isabella Gomez to put a selection of 2021’s performance-built, fall-line fashion to the test.

- Shadowfit Technology
- Micro Max Adjustment
- Quick Kevlar and PowerHook

MSRP: $250
Website: www.salomon.com/snowboard

Salomon says:
District by Des is our unisex offering in a medium flex, with artwork from Desiree Melancon.

SNOWBOARDER says:
Whether dropping into street rails, bombing banked slalom turns, or sending up rooster tails on pow days, Desiree Melancon swears by the intuitive response of the Salomon District in her signature By Des colorway featuring art that pairs with her Gypsy Pro snowboard. The versatility of these bombproof unisex bindings begins with Salomon’s proprietary Shadowfit Technology, which features a soft heelcup that allows for a natural connection between board, boot, and binding, providing support without restricting boardfeel. A versatile technology, turning, tweaking, and pressing are all enhanced by Shadowfit. The power of the District by Des is further increased by Quick Kevlar, Kevlar stringers that work in tandem with the soft heelcup for precise movement, and the PowerHook, which connects the Kevlar with the baseplate to transfer power when turning. In addition, SCS+ Full Eva absorbs shock when landing, so sidehits and park lines are easy to repeatedly lap. Finally, making any changes on the fly is easy with Salomon’s Micro Max Adjustment, an easy, tool-less adjustment system that lets you tweak any part of your bindings that need adjusting, no matter where you are. Bottom line, the Salomon District by Des bindings are a surefire way to amplify your boot-to-board connection this winter, with a pleasing aesthetic brought to you by Desiree, herself.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube
