Watch our love letter to Detroit ‘Showing Up Showing Out’ - a new collaboration between Carhartt WIP, Dazed and NTS, a film by Margot Bowman and Imani Mixon.

The entire popular music landscape owes many of its tricks to the city of Detroit during the Motown era. For Detroiters, Motown offers a time-tested model of a thriving artistic network rooted in young, Black ingenuity. Local artists are fortunate to have such a successful archetype of creative independence.

“The people in Detroit gave up their dollars to come to see a Motown Revue at the Fox Theatre, they knew our routines, they knew our songs, they knew our lyrics, and they would sing along and they embraced us and loved us here in the city of Detroit. That’s the reason we’re famous, because Detroit embraced us,” says Motown recording artist Martha Reeves.

Classic Motown is the most useful, long-lasting example of how one city can have a broad influence on the sonic world, but the story doesn’t start or end there. ‘Showing Up Showing Out’ honours the unbeatable Motown legacy and brings Detroit’s contemporary musical artists into the frame through dreamlike sequences that meld Super8 and HD footage.

We meet singer/songwriter Supercoolwicked as she prepares to release her debut album High Gloss. Then discover harpist Ahya Simone in the tender moments she spends in the city when she isn’t busy reintroducing the harp to newer, younger, cooler audiences and genres simply by being herself. Tunde Olaniran, a Flint native and magnetic pop music artist, prepares to headline Motor City Pride and shares philosophies about what unites the various communities that support him.

The beauty of being in a place like Detroit is that each of these powerhouses know each other and have collaborated or interacted before in some way. We follow Motown Recording artists past and present including Martha Reeves and Icewear Vezzo. Filmmakers Margot Bowman and Imani Mixon bring all the artists together to imagine what life would look like if we cherished the present just as much as the past. Viewers are encouraged to unearth emotions that have more momentum than nostalgia.

‘Showing Up Showing Out’ is an ode to the attitude that has kept Detroiters going for so long. The phrase is something you’d hear on the streets of a Detroit block and probably in any other Black city. It means that you don’t just participate in any kind of way, you bring your full self and your best self with you to every endeavor, no matter how big or small. Even though Detroit’s musical history is often erased, mistold or misrepresented, every artist in this film is a testament to the thriving, pulsing spirit that moves the city and its musical imprint forward. With all the usual trappings of a music video, the film is a love letter to Detroit and its music, to the past and the fresh future ahead, told by voices we very rarely get to hear all at once.

Full Article:
https://www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music/2019/11/movie-premiere-showing-up-showing-out

More from Carhartt WIP
Official website: https://www.carhartt-wip.com/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carharttwip/
Monthly Radio Show: https://soundcloud.com/carharttwip

#CarharttWIP #music #motown

To accompany the Spring/Summer 2019 Carhartt WIP capsule collection, which pays tribute to legendary Nigerian musician and political agitator Fela Anikulapo Kuti, we have once again collaborated with Dazed and NTS Radio.

The short film, titled One Day Go Be One Day, sees artist and filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. travel to the Nigerian capital of Lagos together with London rapper Obongjayar. The result is the experimental short, which takes cues from Fela Kuti’s spiritual roots. Read the full Dazed article here and check the film out below.

To escort the launch, we aksed NTS founder Femi Adeyemi to prepare us a Fela Kuti Carhartt WIP Radio show and also spoke to some of our friends and collaborators within the world of music, including the film’s leading figure, Obongjayar, Ruby Savage of Brownswood Recordings, British trumpet player Sheila Maurice-Grey, who is part of the young, London-based Afrobeat 8-Piece band Kokoroko, contemporary Jazz musician Henry Wu, a.k.a. Kamaal Williams, and one of Germany’s finest underground MCs, Retrogott.

We asked them to sum up what the work of Fela Kuti meant to them, and how his legacy has inspired their own work.

"We should probably be protesting against the same things that Fela protested against: corruption, repression, symbolic and cultural violence, racism."

Full Article & Interview:
https://www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music/2019/04/one-day-go-be-one-day

More from Carhartt WIP
Official website: https://www.carhartt-wip.com/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/carharttwip/
Monthly Radio Show: https://soundcloud.com/carharttwip

#CarharttWIP #music #FelaKuti
