Paris Days 2000 by French Fred.
https://www.esskateboarding.com/capsules/menikmati/ shop the capsule here.
So after the chaotic week spent in Barcelona, we flew to Paris. Because we went to the french
capital ahead of our schedule, it was tough to book a hotel. We could only find one that was so
great. The rooms were small and smelly. After not being stoked in Barcelona, I thought this
could ruin even more the vibe of Koston.
In my memory, Rick McCrank stayed the whole time with us, but when going through the tapes
again, I realised that he just skated one day with us. I don’t remember why he left early. The
two soldiers left were Koston and TX. We didn’t hit so many different spots, and instead went
back couple times to the same spots.
At le Dôme, Koston had a rough time doing his Bs 5-0 grind on the famous kinked hubba. The
run-up is very short, and the ground rather slippery, because of the extra smooth marble. Eric
played a mental game with the spot, but eventually won. Stéphane Larance joined us on few
sessions. I invited him to come, as we were good friends. We filmed a lot together in the
previous years. I might be wrong, but I think Stéphane was on éS in France few years before,
with Luy Pa Sin. For the story, I did film for the éS video, back in 1998, for what turned into an
abandoned first attempt of the video, way before I got the job to do it. I filmed with the 2
frenchies, we collected good footage, we sent it over, and the video was cancelled. But my
tapes disappeared, and never saw them again. I don’t even remember what we filmed. For now,
it is lost forever, but I always hope for the tapes to somehow pop up again some day.

The 2000 éS team in Barcelona - Eric Koston, Rodrigo Tx, Rick McCrank.
Shot and edited by French Fred.
In the year 2000, we organised a filming mission to Barcelona. I had previously been on a
mission with Arto and Kerry Getz the year before, and was so hyped to bring Koston, McCrank
and Tx, who would kill all the perfect spots of BCN. At the time, not much people at all had been
there to enjoy the perfect spots. The ledges at Macba still needed to be waxed. We even
managed to arrange the coming of Tom Penny, to skate with us. At that time, he was still super
elusive, hard to connect with, and virtually impossible to film. Planets were getting aligned. I was
certain this mission who be highly productive and epic.
Tom was coming by car , from Bordeaux, with some friends, and Theo Hand who lived with Tom
in France, to capture whatever he could with Tom, for the Flip video.
When they arrived on the second morning, Tom got out of the car, said hello and told me he just
sprained his ankle at 6 AM that day. He explained that he jumped a big between some rocks. I
couldn’t believe it, and didn’t understand really what happened. Jumping some crazy rock? At
6AM? Next to Salvador Dali”s village, Cadaqués? Your ankle is fucked, you can’t skate?
That was a such huge disillusionment. Tom was here with us, finally, but couldn’t skate!!! The
rock jump is the one in the Sorry video. I often go to Cadaqués, and see the rock all the time.
The gap to clear is huge. Few months ago, I finally got on top of the rock to look at it. No one
would want to try that jump. But Tom Penny did. He thought he could do it. Well, he did, he got
hurt, but it could have been much much worse!!!
Anyway, so one soldier was down. To my big surprise, the planets were indeed not as aligned
as I thought, and this filming mission proved to almost be a fiasco.
Somehow, Koston was hating on the spots... Macba, “the ledges suck”. Eric was really not in a
good mood.... He was not enjoying himself. Most sessions were a struggle for him. He even
had some break downs and freak outs while trying some stuff, because we had to try to skate
and get stuff, but he wasn’t into it. So it was like everything was imposed to him. That negative
energy rubbed off on McCrank. I didn’t understand why things were going so wrong. It was like
cooking with all the best ingredients, and fucking up your recipe. Rick got sucked up in that
mood. I kept pushing to get things done, and that would make things worse.
They were over it. A lot of cool tricks got attempted, but without success... At least, Rodrigo
didn’t get affected so much, and skated very well, and proved that the spots I had for them were
really good and had much potential. He saved the trip. You can only imagine the result if
everyone would have been feeling at his best, feeding each other with hype and motivation
Rick and Eric pushed so that we would leave Barcelona to go to Paris. That’s where they
wanted to skate, that’s all they had in mind. So eventually, we left BCN ahead of schedule, and
flew to Paris...

Board Specifications: https://www.rssurf.com/collections/surfboards/products/musubi

The “Musubi” was the Best of the Test in our first-ever People’s Board Review

Welcome back to The People’s Board Review, a board test series in which we enlist working-stiff, relatable rippers to give us feedback on the latest surfboard models in dims you can find right there in the rack at your local surf shop. For this review, we put four RS Surf Co. models in the hands of four surfers of varying sizes and board preferences and took them down to fairly average California beach break on a peaky, head-high day. The boards included the “El Bandido”, a performance blade with training wheels; the “Musubi”, a squished-down shortboard with a curvy outline; the “Love Capsule”, a fat and flat small-wave ripper; and the “Low Love”, a high-performance blade meant for juicy surf.

In the end, for average California surf, the “Musubi” shocked the testers with its responsiveness and earned the highest marks of the bunch. Here’s what you need to know about it:

The Gist:
With a fuller outline and plenty of foam, it’s no surprise that this board paddles well and carries speed, but its ability to still perform at or above the lip is as mysterious as it is welcome. The “Musubi” carries a constant curve from nose to tail and can be ridden as either a thruster or quad. At a glance, it's a design that appears to be more small-wave groveler than high-octane rip stick, which is why it shocked our testers with its performance levels in rippable faces. “I tried two airs—it’s probably been 15 years since I’ve tried an air,” said Tester #2, who is 5’11” and 215lbs, but rode a 6’0 x 19” x 2.25” “Musubi” with a volume of 30.8 L -- a full 2.2L less than his normal shortboard. While this particular board was on the small side (for him), Tester #4 was sold (literally) on the “Musubi”. “For the waves around here that are soft with a few punchy sections...this board would work perfect. I’m going to order this board, actually.” All four testers rode this craft with traditional polyurethane foam construction, although RS also offers this board in epoxy.

Speed: 8.2/10
“It had a lot of drive and flow down the line,” said Tester #3 of the 5’10” x 18.75” x 2.44” “Musubi”. Being 175 lbs, Tester #3 was really happy with the way the board generated speed without a ton of operator effort. “It’s just easy to ride, just kind of gets up and goes...no surprises here.” The other three testers all agreed with that sentiment.

Frontside Maneuverability: 7.9/10
Tester #4 had some trouble turning the “Musubi” frontside. At just 125 pounds, she probably needed even less foam than the 5’8" x 18.65” x 2.25” dims she was riding. “I struggled with my turns,” she said, before admitting that she generally didn’t gravitate toward this type of fuller-volume shred stick to being with. “But it would work good as a step up in a bigger point break.” Tester #4, however, was the only outlier in this category, with all the others agreeing that it offered a surprising amount of responsiveness.

Backside Maneuverability: 6.8/10
The rating for backside maneuverability varied heavily among our testers, which makes sense when you consider the curvy outline of the “Musubi” makes it a little tricky to quickly pivot, especially with your back facing the wave. Tester #1 -- who 5’9”, 150 lbs. and rode "Musubi" in 5’8 x 18.65” x 2.25” -- told us this model has a sweet spot, but it’s a little finicky and isn’t as user friendly on the backhand as the “El Bandido”.

Paddling: 8.3/10
“There was a lot of foam under my chest, and a lot of times on boards that paddle that well, they don’t necessarily turn as well—you sacrifice one or the other,” said Tester #1. “But this one paddled really well, and then when I stood up it felt like a normal shortboard.” Who said you can’t have the best of both worlds?

The People Have Spoken, And The "Musubi" Is Their Favorite RS Surf Co. Craft

Board Specifications: https://www.rssurf.com/collections/surfboards/products/low-love

Here’s what you need to know about the “Low Love”, the board that all the testers agreed was the best of the four when the surf is pumping.

The Gist:
There’s no shortage of responsiveness and control in this low-volume, high-performance thruster -- our testers agreed that the board can more or less do whatever you want -- but putting it to good use requires good surf, being in good surf shape, or both. Tester #2 (5’8”, 175 lbs.) isn’t accustomed to riding anything this blade-y, so he took a 5’11” x 18.5” x 2.38” 27.4 L “Low Love” for a spin first thing in the morning while his coffee buzz was still good and strong. “This board was obviously designed for Lowers,” said Tester #3, who ripped on the board, but said low-volume shred sticks like that are more effort than he usually wants to give. If you don't mind putting in the work to surf at peak performance, however, the "Low Love" is a magic carpet. All four testers rode this craft with traditional polyurethane foam construction, although RS also offers this board in epoxy.

Speed: 7.7/10

The “Low Love” isn’t built for generating its own speed, but rather harnessing and controlling the speed that a quality wave provides. “It felt like it had good drive on steep waves, but on more slope-y waves I struggled to get it going,” said Tester #1 (5’9”, 150 lbs.) of the 5’10” x 18.38” x 2.25” 25.5 L "Low Love” that he put through the paces. Luckily, most of waves on offer had plenty of curve in the face and therefore the testers found plenty of speed to tap into.

Frontside Maneuverability: 7.2/10
All the testers agreed that this model was by far the most shreddable of the four. With tons of entry rocker and a hard edge throughout, this board was perfect for the steepest peaks on hand for test day. “It was really responsive, but also it was so easy to follow through on,” said Tester #3 (5’6”, 125 lbs.) of her 5’7” x 18.33" x 2.22" 24.41 L “Low Love”. “I’d come out of a turn and I didn’t even have to try, I was just already going back into another one. There was a lot of control, where I’d push as hard as I wanted and it didn’t slide out.” As the lightest tester, Tester #3 felt that the board matched her size and her approach perfectly. “I honestly thought it was amazing, and I didn’t want to stop riding it.”

Backside Maneuverability: 6.8/10
It should come as little surprise that across all four models, the testers consistently scored backside maneuverability lower than frontside. After all, you’d have to be some kind of psychopath to feel like you’re more in control with your back to the wave. Still, it’s a performance board, and it didn’t have any bad surprises going backhand. “It surfed the way it looked – responsive, fast-twitch, quick transitioning from rail to rail,” says Tester #3 (5’8”, 175 lbs.) who rode the “Low Love” in 5’11” x 18.5” x 2.38” 27.4 L. “It is very maneuverable.”

Paddling: 7/10
When it comes to surfboards, high-performance ripping and easy paddling are inherently at odds. The “Low Love” is a stellar board for pumping surf, but it isn’t easy on the arms. Unless you’re a rubber-limbed grom, a pro surfer or someone who really keeps up with their fitness, expect to wear yourself out while surfing the “Low Love” for hours at a time. “It’s not the kind of board I normally ride,” said Tester #3. “But at my advanced age of 46, anything under 19 inches wide is a red flag.”

Board Specifications: https://www.rssurf.com/collections/surfboards/products/el-bandido

Welcome to the first-ever People’s Board Review. “What the hell is this and why does it have vaguely Marxist undertones,” you ask? Well, it’s a board test series in which we enlist working-stiff, relatable rippers to give us feedback on the latest surfboard models in dims you can find right there in the rack at your local surf shop. Because you probably don’t need to know if a pro’s custom sled feels a little off when reconnecting with the transition after an inverted full-rotation—but you do want to know if the stock version paddles well, if it can generate speed easily and if the thing can turn worth a damn.

Here’s what you need to know about the “El Bandido”, the board our testers agreed was the most well-rounded of the bunch:

The Gist:
With its wide point forward and some hidden foam in the nose, this tri-fin craft offers high-performance feelings in a range of conditions without making you work too hard for it. While Tester #4 — the lightest of the bunch at 125 lbs., and who rode the “Bandido” in 5’8” x 19.25″ x 2.38″ 27.57 L — didn’t like that the board carried extra volume above the chest, the three other testers thought the “El Bandido” knew its niche — somewhere between a potato-chip thruster and a beefy groveler — and filled it perfectly. “This was the most well-rounded shortboard,” said Tester #1, who is 5’9” and typically rides boards with a volume around 26 liters, but didn’t mind the slightly fuller shape (ridden in 5’8” x 19.25” x 2.38” with 27 L). “It caught waves really easily and felt like it did everything I wanted it to. Just a good overall California shortboard. It’s a little more volume than I’m used to, but it didn’t feel too floaty at all. I was surprised by how well this board worked.” All four testers rode this craft with traditional polyurethane foam construction, although RS also offers this board in epoxy.

Speed: 8/10
In the interest of getting a wide range of perspectives, the sizes of our testers ranged from 5’6” and 125 pounds to 5’11” and 215 pounds, with a preferred volume anywhere from 24 to 33 L. That said, all four agreed the “El Bandido” carried plenty of speed, especially for a fairly traditional thruster that isn’t specifically designed to coast through flat spots, with their speed score averaging out at 8. The lowest score for speed was a 7 from Tester #2 (5’11”, 215 lbs.), who rode the “Bandido” in 6’2” 20.5” x 2.5” 36 L and still thought it had plenty of glide. “I really liked the fact that I was riding a 6’2”, but it felt like a 6’0”. That little extra length helped me pretty much get any wave I wanted. It was really user friendly on the pop up and allowed me to kinda just cruise and link together [turns].”

Frontside Maneuverability: 7.3/10
“The width being forward, I personally didn’t like that,” said Tester #4 (5’6”, 125 lbs.), a light-footed ripper whose comfort zone is at or above the lip. “I felt like when I was bottom turning, it would get a little stuck.” While Tester #4 wasn’t feeling the foam distribution, and gave it a low score of 5 for frontside maneuverability, the two heaviest surfers thought it excelled in this category, giving it an 8 and a 9.

Backside Maneuverability: 7.5/10
Most surfers rate themselves as better surfers going frontside, but not Tester #1 (5’9”, 150 lbs.) who rode this model in 5’8” x 19.25″ x 2.38″ 27.57 L. “I always judge a board by its performance on my backhand, because I suck going right [laughs].” After a couple of backhand cracks on back-to-back shoulder-high lefts, Tester #1 came in singing the “El Bandido’s” praises. “I felt like I could come off the bottom backside and whip this board into the lip without a second thought.”

Paddling: 8/10
Tester #3 (5’8”, 175 lbs.) summed up the way all four testers felt about how the “El Bandido” paddled: “Something I really liked is that it’s not a round nose, but it has some width up there, so it helps you paddle. It seems like it gives you a little bit more volume, but it’s sort of hidden…it’s not all chunky. It’s just what the doctor ordered.” Tester #3’s “El Bandito” dims were 5’8” x 19.5” x 2.5” with a volume of 30.7 L.

RS Surf Co.’s “El Bandido” Doesn’t Make You Work For Performance

Board Specifications: Welcome to the first-ever People’s Board Review. “What the hell is this and why does it have vaguely Marxist undertones,” you ask? Board Specifications: https://www.rssurf.com/collections/surfboards/products/love-capsule

Relatable rippers break down this white-knuckle ride in The People’s Board Review

Here’s what you need to know about the “Love Capsule”, the model all testers agree is one of the fastest they’ve ever put under their feet.

The Gist:
While this voluminous groveler is capable of warp speeds through flat sections in gutless waves, getting it to turn in more powerful pockets can be tricky, making this a specialized board for conditions that normally require a lot of effort to surf. All four of our testers agreed that this flat, pill-shaped quad would rule in the small stuff, or at a long, soft point like Malibu or Scorpion Bay. But that’s not to say there aren’t some merits to the design even in steep beach break conditions, which is where we tested it. Tester #2 (5’11”, 215 lbs.) rode the “Love Capsule” in 6’0” x 19.8” x 2.8” 37.42 L, and said that it felt just right. “If you’ve had a breakfast burrito, and you’re feeling a little slow, this is the board right here — it’s all love. I’d definitely prefer it at a wave with some length of ride, but I can tell it’s a good board.” All four testers rode this craft with traditional polyurethane foam construction, although RS also offers this board in epoxy.

Speed: 9.6/10
Two of our testers gave “Love Capsule” 10 for speed, and the others gave 9.5, so you know it’s a rocket ship. Tester #1 (5’9”, 150 lbs.) rode the “Love Capsule” in 5’6” x 19.5″ x 2.7″ 30.39 L, which is much more volume than his standard 26 L shortboard, and he could feel how the extra foam translated to extra speed. “It’s one of the fastest surfboards I’ve ever stood on,” Tester #1 after a few laps. “Never thought I’d say this, but it’s honestly too fast, at least for these conditions. I would love to ride this model around 25 L or 26 L at a wave like Malibu, where it’s soft and you’re staying in the pocket and flying through flat sections.”

Frontside Maneuverability: 7.1/10
All four testers agreed the “Love Capsule” worked better going frontside, and it makes sense: the “Love Capsule” is a voluminous craft best surfed over the front foot, down-the-line, and above the water—all of which is easier while facing the wave. Tester #3 (5’8”, 175 lbs.) rode the “Love Capsule” in 5’6” x 19.5″ x 2.7″ 30.39 L, and said the boards height and volume felt perfect for milking small south swells in California for all they’re worth. “I would ride something like this in the summer when it’s all lefts and I’m going frontside,” said the goofy-footer. “But it’s not really that conducive to backside surfing.”

Backside Maneuverability: 5.6/10
As mentioned, the testers felt that the “Love Capsule” was a bit tricky to maneuver on their backhand in the steep, dumpy conditions on hand, which left some of the testers considering the possibilities on other kinds of waves. “Give me this board in a small left point and I’ll probably have a different opinion on about how it feels on my backhand,” said the regular-footed Tester #1.

Paddling: 8.8/10
Of all four RS Surf Co. boards tested on this day, none earned the same level of consensus on all of the criteria from the testers: It flies down the line, works better frontside than backside, and it blissfully paddles like a longboard. “This is a good board to get the confidence levels up,” Tester #2 told us.

During that trip, Kerry experienced some heavy madness while
trying some tricks, especially that specific time at Macba, attempting a Fs flip down the famous
4 blocs. The footage of his melt down became very well known. You can watch it in the short
episode focused on Kerry Getz.
About this episode:
The intro with Kerry was filmed by Arto Saari. Some riots occurred in downtown Barcelona,
about the wishes of independence of the Catalunya province, for which Barcelona is the capital.
This was in 1999, and in the following 20 years, history repeated numerous times, until 2019,
when Catalunya really went for its independence. But the process was brutally interrupted by
the Spanish government.
Kerry was messing around about Fred. During that trip, some tensions emerged, not because of
filming matters, but the choices of music played in the van!
