We will be dropping the nominees for each category over the next week, leading up to the first annual SNOWBOARDER AWARDS. Below is the Men's Rookie of the Year Nominees. The winner of each category will be announced during the first annual award show at Copper Mountain on Feb. 6, 2020 (while the Dew Tour is in town). With +350 past, present and future pro riders casting their votes for the individuals and projects that most influenced our culture this past year culminating into one big night, it is poised to be quite the party (FREE TO THE PUBLIC!). Feel free to come join us in celebrating the winners, as well as the top nominees (listed below).

JAMIE ANDERSON
Since she made her debut on the X Games podium in 2005, Jamie Anderson has been a force in competition snowboarding. As of this writing, she possesses more X Games golds than any other athlete (male or female) and her collection of medals, championships, and awards is very, very large. But while she is obviously at home on the slopestyle course, in 2019 she went out of her comfort zone and brought her natural ability, tenacious drive, and relentless progression to the backcountry to make her very own movie, Unconditional. Unconditional took Jamie to Japan, Alaska, and the British Columbia backcountry, where, along with friends, she navigated steeps and launched off cheese wedges, applying the rotational physics she has honed in the park to the off piste and riding away with some of the best women’s backcountry footage to date.

MARIA THOMSEN
Before 2019 had even officially started, Maria Thomsen was in the streets dropping into consequential steel, as the first woman ever to be invited to compete against men in X Games Real Snow. In the start of the season the Denmark-born Thomsen amassed a timeline of technical tricks more than worthy of being pitted against her fellow Real Snow competitors. From there, her footage made even more of an impact in Absinthe’s Isle of Snow, securing her nods from many of her peers in the 2020 Rider of the Year Awards.

JILL PERKINS
There are few more stringent critics of tricks that those who have made their reputations braving cold cities in pursuit of steel and cement. In the streets, creativity is fluid, but proper is black and white and all clips are held to the highest standard. This makes it further impressive that Jill Perkins’ part in Everybody, Everybody garnered so much acclaim this past year. Rider of the Year voters, when giving a nod to Jill for Women’s Most Valuable Video Player, were effusive when saying that her section was not only really good for 2019... it was really good for all time.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

Feel free to come join us in celebrating the winners, as well as the top nominees (listed below).

TRAVIS RICE
Just one viewing of Dark Matter and it’s clear why Travis Rice is up for 2020 Men’s Most Valuable Video Player. His riding elicits both excitement and anxiety, the first because of the sheer insanity of the lines he rides and the second because of the sheer insanity of the lines he rides—much due to the fact that in Dark Matter, viewers got a firsthand look at the Jackson Hole native’s POV via mind-melting GoPro angle. In 2019, whether Travis was exploring his Teton backyard with Bryan Iguchi and Jeremy Jones in Roadless or finally descending AK lines he’s been eyeing for over a decade with Elias Elhardt in Dark Matter, his riding took dreamboarding to a literal definition in his video offerings, proving once again that Travis is at the top of the game.

MAX WARBINGTON
Max Warbington doesn’t slow down much and 2019 was no exception. The Bend, Oregon native’s riding is equal parts energetic and considered, showcasing a consistently surprising barrage of creative tricks, no matter if he’s riding transition, backyard set ups, the streets, park benches, or anything else he fancies. His footage in Suzy Greenberg was stand-out. His presence in Airblaster’s SKOLF is integral and influential. And the SKOLF video? Check. Torment Promotional Video? Check. And then, of course, he made his own movie with his own vision, Brain Bowl.

SAGE KOTSENBURG
While it’s the collective effort of the crew that made 2020 Movie of the Year nominee Joy such a pleasure to watch, there was resounding insistence that Sage Kotsenburg earn Men’s Most Valuable Video Player of 2020 for his clips in that film. While Sage’s Chad’s Gap ender, for many of the 2020 ROTY voters was enough to place him squarely in the nominees for men’s MVVP, his entire performance was so comprehensive; truly the culmination of the past few seasons for the Park City native, come to fruition. Sage’s riding resonated throughout all of snowboarding.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube

Feel free to come join us in celebrating the winners, as well as the top nominees (listed below).

JOY
It’s hard to keep anything that happens in a given season a secret nowadays. Instagram’s ubiquitous and most everyone has a 4k camera in their jacket pocket. Followers are used to the constant updates that are at odds with the pre-social media anticipation that would follow a film crew over the course of a season in the early aughts, expectation loading up until the movies shipped to shops. It’s rare to feel that today and so when a video does elicit that excitement, it’s all the more special. Joy did just that. Rumors of an epic session at Chad’s Gap started floating around nearly as soon as Sage Kotsenburg touched down on the landing of the iconic spot. But leaks there were not. It wasn’t until the labor of love premiered in Hollywood that the greater snowboarding populous laid eyes on what Sage, Red Gerard, Ben Ferguson, and friends had done over the season that the secret was out.

DARK MATTER
When tallying the votes for 2020 Movie of the Year, it’s no surprise that Mathematics is involved. For two decades, Travis Rice has had his sights set squarely on this are of Alaska’s Chugach Mountain Range. In his previous mind melting movies, the right timing and conditions had eluded him, but in the winter of 2019, everything lined up. With German big mountain maestro, Elias Elhardt and cinematographer Curt Morgan at his sides, Travis returned to AK to finally drop into faces he had been studying for years, ready to finally reap the rewards of his patience. The result is Dark Matter, a twenty-minute feature that showcases the most technical freeriding done to date.

SUZY GREENBERG
If one of the most revered qualities of a snowboarding video is that it makes you want to go snowboard, then Suzy Greenberg is undoubtedly one of the best videos in a very long time, maybe ever. The brainchild of Scott Stevens, created with Jesse Burtner and filmer Garrett Read, Suzy Greenberg is a 100% honest look at snowboarding and the inherent reasons we continue to strap in each season. And that’s no small feat. While it’s easy for all of us to identify the sparks that keep us making turns year in and year out, it’s definitely an undertaking to portray that on screen in a genuine way. Scott’s dedication to snowboarding itself, combined with his unequivocal knowledge of its history, movies, and media provides an uncommon POV, and when this collided with the unbridled, out-of-the-box Burtner creativity and Garrett’s dedication to getting the shots that the crew wanted, a archetypical snowboarder’s snowboarding movie was created.

For the latest from Snowboarder Magazine check out:
https://www.snowboarder.com/
Facebook - https://sbdr.co/Facebook
Instagram - https://sbdr.co/Instagram
Twitter - https://sbdr.co/Twitter
YouTube - https://sbdr.co/YouTube
