For more than two decades Amsterdam-based record store and distributor Rush Hour has been serving up exceptional, eclectic music. Launched in 1997 by Antal Heitlager and Christiaan Macdonald (who left the company in 2012), the company has grown to become a key institution in the global music community. As a label Rush Hour has always provided room for fresh, up-and-coming artist like Rednose District and Aardvarck in its early days, as well as Hunee or Interstellar Funk in recent years. In-between they peppered their catalogue with must-have records by legends like Virgo Four, Ron Trent, Anthony “Shake” Shakir and Soichi Terada to name but a few.<br /><br />Aside from spreading soulful sonic wisdom via their label and it’s many sub-labels, the company also functions as a distributor for all sorts of music and labels such as Music From Memory, Knekelhuis, STROOM 〰, L.I.E.S., and Whities. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Rush Hour co-founder Antal has prepared a mix that takes a mesmeric look at the distribution side of his company, with released and soon-to-be-released tracks from artists such as Garrett, Sabla and Hypnobeat.<br /><br />As usual, we also sat down to speak to this month’s guest, getting Antal’s insight on his company, his passion, and the current state of music business. Listen back to all Carhartt WIP Radio shows: <br />https://soundcloud.com/carharttwip<br /><br />Illa J:<br />When Detroit native John Derek Yancey, better known as Illa J, released his album "Home,” in 2017, it was partly an act of self-affirmation for the rapper-slash-singer. As the younger brother of hip hop legend J Dilla, who tragically passed away in 2006, the 32-year-old artist has spent much of his career in the shadow of his illustrious sibling – even playing a bit-part role in Slum Village after Dilla’s death. Around 2014, he eventually parted with the crew and moved to Montreal where he would hone his artistic skillset, free from the influence of his native Detroit peers. On returning to his hometown, he went straight to the studio to record “Home.” It was the album that would see him step out of his brother’s shadow for the first time, showcasing his talent not simply as a rapper, but as an accomplished, ambitious vocalist. Last November he released his latest album, the eponymously titled “John Yancey.” It’s one which oscillates more sharply between R&B and hip hop, delivering twelve songs of wispy vocals and breathless raps. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Yancey has selected some of his tunes, that DJ Glenn Astro put together to showcase the eclectic nature of his work, from that raw rap talent shown on his first album – the 2008 release “Yancey Boys” – to a more mature, mellow artist a decade on.<br /><br />As usual, we also sat down with the artist, to discuss music, family, his hometown and why people from Detroit have such a special affinity for Prince. Watching Pierre's footage one could think he's from California. The two parts he put out so far were both filmed in the Bay Area. Well, this one has been filmed in Barcelona, too. His family chose the Bay Area as their vacation destination for countless times and since he's a super friendly human being, he was able to connect right away and now has a group of friends over there he can visit any time. As part of this exchange program, his homie Tony Potenti came over to Europe.
