Do you ever get the feeling that you know what you want to write but because you already know it becomes a menial task? The process is what lures you in, the get cliché the journey is the destination. Being 31 I grew up watching Mark, watching him grow to become a very big name. And that is part of the problem because most themes have been talked about over and over. At the same time, all the accolades Mr. Appleyard has collected over time are not to be overlooked. Most people who skate have never been and will never be part of a classic video, or will have at least two classic video parts. Especially in today's climate, it is hard to tell if new icons like Appleyard's will even be a part of our culture. The "older" skaters remain iconic while Instagram has created a new playing field which has been slowly changing our game. Anyway, The point was that I knew what I could write but what did I need to write and what did I want to write? So I asked multiple people what they thought I should write.<br /><br />Yo' Daniel I am struggling a bit with the text about Mark what did you notice during our time with him?<br /><br />"What I realized is that he reached this high level of skating and ever since he did that he just stayed that good. When I saw him skating he hadn't really lost a step and that is something to think about."<br /><br />Danny (Sommerfeld) what should I write about Mark? Should I mention that his transworld trick tip taught you how to nollie flip?<br /><br />"No.. that wouldn't make any sense, who wants to know that? Just write that he was super nice and really professional! Remember when we pulled up to his house? He was playing ping pong, with Sammy (Montano) in his garage. Remember the huge poster of one of his covers in the garage? The map with all the places he has been? And that was only the garage, in his living room, he had multiple covers up and trophies, a couple of them, amongst which the 2003 SOTY statue.<br /><br />Mark came up during my time, and because he has been around for multiple years we sometimes forget how crazy good he is on the board.<br />Being invited to his house reminded me that he is a really good skater and that we shouldn't forget that.<br /><br />He showed us his (and his sons) lego collection, which has a Porsche and millennium falcon amongst it. He played on his drumkit, we sat in his garden and played with all the toys.”

My focus was on the change of cameras. After having filmed a number of years with various HD cameras, I went back in time for this project to the VX-1000 from 1995, and the Canon Super Zoom Automatic 1014 from 1973. I didn’t use these cameras in the traditional way but used the technical possibilities of 2018. For example, I recorded the VX images on an SD card instead of tapes, and I filmed with my phone through the viewfinder of the Canon 1014.<br /><br />This Super 8 camera I had bought at the time for making b-roll shots for The Bombaklats, but after I received a number of failed cassettes, I did not have that much confidence anymore. Partly because of with the VX-1000, where we regularly film with our phones through the viewfinder to watch a clip back, I came up with a new idea. I attached a phone case to the camera so that I could easily film through the viewfinder. Meanwhile, this is Duct tape prototype number 4, and the images are now sharper than ever. When I was filming with this thing, I obviously attracted a lot of attention: everyone wanted to know what I was doing.<br /><br />This spot, right next to Rotterdam Centraal, is inspired by Dirk Middelkoop in the Boombap video. He does a line there where he comes from behind the pillars and a does big Fs Blunt on the curb. I always thought that was so sick, and Robbin agreed.<br /><br />We first went together, after we had filmed a good clip on the other side of the train station. While Robbin was checking out the spot, it started to rain a little, but not even fifteen minutes later a huge storm broke loose, the hailstones poured past us, and the streets filled with water in no time. We were happily covered there, but skating was no longer the case. Later it appeared that this storm had caused a lot of damage in Rotterdam.<br /><br />A few days later we were there with a larger group. I never think of trying a back noseblunt myself, but you can always ask Robbin. After he had figured out what he wanted to do at the beginning, it did not take long before he got the line. Ziggy was there and made this lovely picture! The spot, the trick, and everyone in the background.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. "Alles Wisselt" Dutch for everything changes is the final part of the "Creating Lines" Momentum series. This one really combines people of all ages and styles from young Jayden de Lange al the way up to an older and way underappreciated skater like Damiaan "Paco" Winkelman. We would like to thank all that participated for their hard work and great content and we hope you "the viewer" enjoyed it as much as we did.

A visit back to Europe’s and especially The Netherland’s most iconic and fun skate spots, “The Yard”. For those that know this edit holds many gems, including Wieger, P-rod, Paterno, Tommy van Berkel, and Louisa Menke 2004 footage. We wish we could run into this time traveling German streaker so we could re-live those times through our own eyes.
