In an age when both filmmaking, paddling and media coverage have reached unparalleled heights, it was fitting that the Film Achievement Award kicked off the second annual Canoe & Kayak Awards on Aug. 1 at Salt Lake City. It was also fitting that Fish Munga, which set the new standard for whitewater location filming and documentary story telling, would win the award.

Fish Munga founder Steve Fisher, produced, directed and paddled in "CONGO: The Grand Inga Project," a feature-length film documenting the first descent of the world's largest whitewater rapids. Fisher, Rush Sturges, Tyler Bradt and Ben Marr completed the Congo River's 1.6-million cfs crux in October 2011. The sweeping film Fisher released in August 2012 documents the history of the Congo river and the team's efforts to gain access to, and then run, the world's biggest rapids.

Paddling is about more than hucking the biggest waterfall or kayaking the longest expedition. For some people, kayaking is a lifesaver—physically, mentally and emotionally. Recognizing paddling's ability to heal, inspire and empower, people around the country have started organizations and nonprofits around the sport, and on Aug. 1 at the Canoe & Kayak Awards Show, First Descents stood out above the rest for its dedication to helping cancer survivors reclaim life through whitewater.

Started by Brad Ludden in 2001, First Descents is known for helping young cancer-fighters to paddle, climb and surf beyond their diagnosis and connect with others doing the same. The program is free, including travel scholarships when needed.

When Dominique Liboiron canoed 3,300 miles from Saskatchewan to New Orleans to release his beloved uncle's ashes, he never anticipated that his adventure would be anything more than that. But it is exactly a journey like his that represents the essence of Canoe & Kayak, winning him the inaugural Spirit of Adventure Award at the 2013 C&K Awards Show.

His dedication went to those suffering from the Bow River Flood, one of the worst floods in Canadian history and which wiped away the town of High River.

Liboiron began his journey to honor his late uncle Mitch, who loved canoeing and New Orleans in equal measure, on June 8, 2012. He canoed from Saskatchewan through 12 states and along four major rivers, including the Mississippi, en route to New Orleans, a journey he thought of as his last trip with his uncle.

Garcia is best known for pushing the boundaries of both whitewater and film. In the last year, he has charged countless big drops and competed in the world's toughest whitewater competition. With Rush Sturges and Rafa Ortiz, he made the first single-day descent of the Rio Santo Domingo, at 1,000 feet-per-mile the steepest section of whitewater ever run. Garcia also co-founded Substantial Media House, whose films take audiences to places and rivers few have ever seen, with stylish edits documenting the lives and exploits of the world's most dynamic boaters.

Idaho paddling legend Rob Lesser was honored this evening with the C&K Awards Lifetime Achievement Award for his enduring contributions to the sport of paddling. Lesser, 60, was among the world's most accomplished paddlers in the 1970s into the 1990s. He is best known for pioneering the Grand Canyon of the Stikine in northern British Columbia, which remains a benchmark test of commitment and paddling skill.

Lesser also made the first descent of Idaho's North Fork of the Payette, and later helped to save that great river through his conservation work. The North Fork has played a storied role in the development of whitewater paddling, serving as a training ground for generations of elite paddlers, and a launch pad for significant expeditions around the world.

Lesser popularized whitewater rodeos in the West, which eventually grew into the freestyle boom which revolutionized whitewater boat designs and paddling skills. But he made his name on big, powerful, unforgiving rivers. From the mid-1970s into the 1980s, Lesser put up first descents all over the world, including the Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone in Wyoming, the Bio Bio in Chile and the Braldu in Nepal.

But it was the Grand Canyon of the Stikine that inscribed Rob Lesser's name indelibly in the annals of paddling history. The Class V crucible that he pioneered in 1981 is still considered the defining benchmark of whitewater skill. That descent and other Lesser exploits were documented on episodes of ABC's American Sportsman program from 1979 to 1983, and did much to popularize whitewater paddling in the United States.

Lesser was inducted into the International Whitewater Hall of Fame with the inaugural class. Such accolades are welcome, but the true measure of Lesser's legacy are the accomplishments of those who blazed farther along the path he pioneered—a lineage of whitewater exploration that carries straight through the Tsang Po Gorge, to the Congo's Inga Rapids and Mexico's Rio Santo Domingo.
