Ace Buchan's stupendous win over Kelly Slater in the Quiksilver Pro, was not only stirring because he delivered the victory speech in fluent French, but also for the returned stoke from the biggest crowd on tour.<br /><br />The Hossegor beach scene must be seen to be believed. A check of the numberplates in any of the carparks here will remind you that this stretch isn't just the hub of French surfing, but is the entire axis around which all of European beach culture revolves. <br /><br />And there's no shame in flying your freak flag here; all the moustaches, speedoes, nipple rings, Moon buggies and Chihuahuas a man can handle.

Take over countries in the same way you plan to take over the heat-draw when the contest starts.<br /> 2. Co-ordination: Jumping rope in the bullpen keeps the heart pumping especially in the Tahitian heat.<br /> 3. Relaxation: Trying not to go troppo by finding a solitary place to deep breathe and focus on the job at hand when the surf returns. <br /> 4. Familiarisation: Swim, float, snorkel around the break, see why it breaks where it does, get to know the place.<br /> 5. Association: They may be your foe as soon as the contest singlet is on, but hanging around like-minded positive chaps is an excellent way to keep focussed.

It was a dusty old day after the close of Mundaka and like happy zombies they awoke in the afternoon and packed their boardbags. From this juncture, the crew went either one of two separate ways.<br /> Either (1) Cashing in their chips at the departures lounge of Aeropuerto de Bilbao and flying home after almost a month traipsing through Europe. <br /> Or (2) rolling the dice again and slingshotting back up to Hossegor on the off chance something might become of a mysterious new orb of swell that had drifted into the Bay of Biscay.<br /> Well, good things come to those who chase, and this is the result -- La Graviere, in all her brutal sand-monster glory! <br /> While there have been some jawdropping free sessions around the tour this season, it's hard to top something that packs more PSI than Keramas did in July, is more top-to-bottom than Winki was in March, and is a whole bunch less crowded than the Duranbah sessions of February.<br /> Hold onto your keyboards as Ace, Whits, Wardo and 'Mr Mundaka' himself CJ Hobgood treat it like an Hawaiian warm-up session (check for CJ's switchfoot pit),

AMERICAN SANDWICH - BENNY, DANE & GABE BREAK BREAD AT LABENNE<br /> In the bread baking boulangeries and supermarches of Labenne, south of Hossegor, apart from steaming fresh baguettes they also sell "American Sandwich" a loaf of bread that can be sliced. It doesn't taste overly exciting but keeps for a longer time. Put it this way, it does the job when there's nothing else around.<br /> <br /> Similarly, that is what happens when the waves around Labenne aren't the perfect six-foot rotund-o-beasts the place is renowned for - it may not be anywhere near as fresh and tasty, but it's still a bunch of fun, especially when Ben Bourgeois, Dane Reynolds and Gabe Kling decide to hit the shore dump.
